  • Myles To Lock?

If ANY sight embodies the new direction of the Roosters, it is over there, in the middle of the field, in the slender form of Nate Myles.

"I haven't had a beer for 12 weeks," he said. "It's something that's been very different. I had Christmas up in Cairns, and not having a drop of alcohol for 12 weeks is a bit of an eye-opener. Especially with the way North Queensland is in the heat and the way my family likes to spend Christmas. It's been a learning curve."

As a consequence, Myles is an eternity away from the man who was stood down for six matches for defecating in the hallway of a Terrigal hotel after a boozy session last year. These days, he might be in the clubs at 5am but he is the designated driver.

The result: He's lost 10kg and is humming along at 102kg. "He's almost got a six pack," captain Braith Anasta laughed.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

The weight loss means Myles is expected to move from the front-row to lock when the season starts - but he has gained in other areas.

"For the first time in my life I have to watch how light I'm actually getting," he said. "For my position, I need to be carrying some weight.

"But the biggest thing is watching my behaviour, and seeing how other people act on the drink."

This is a considerable admission for Myles, who said after he was stood down that he did not have a drinking problem.

"You can sort of work out what happened last year," he said. "I've got to work out what works for me and I don't know that at the moment. I'm overstepping the line too much on the drink so I've got to work out what works for me.

"My life has been better, to be honest. The things I have to get done through the week, they get done.

"Don't get me wrong: I want to go out and have a game of golf and have a beer. Or sit at home at Chrissie and have a beer. I'm not going to go cold turkey. I want to work out the balance for me, and I don't know that yet, so I'm going to not take the risk of getting into strife."

It makes you wonder: has Myles effected this change for him or the club? "For myself, mate," Myles said. "I want to stay at this club. I love being a part of this club. I didn't want another f ... up, get sacked and then deal with it."

I always preferred him in the 2nd row. It'll be interesting to see how he goes at lock...

Smith is definitely making some real changes..

Could be classic Smith mindgames, or Cherro is in the second row, or smith is using the new recruits Conn/Guerro as an incentive to get existing guys hungry for their spots.
Sunday mid March is when we'll find out.

Losing that weight will increase his mobility tenfold. We might even see him put in some more grubbers.

Perhaps he's our solution at 5/8??

Myles at lock, hmmm, there's going to be some competition for that spot what with MAubs, Conn, Guerra and Baiteri also suited not to mention Anasta. I should also say that Nate is talking the talk and I hope for his sake that he continues to walk the sober walk.

Lock would be perfect for Myles so he can make 40+ tackles a game and not hae to focus on his attack as much. I wouldn't have him at second row as he doesnt have the build, speed or the attacking ability needed to hit holes out wide. Id like to see Cherrington, Symonds, JWH and Conn all be used as this role.

Confimed at the coaching clinic - he has been training at lock.

Doesn't look that much trimmer compared to last year???

Myles should encourage Carney to follow his diet as well as his non drinking habbits.

Carney looks as though he's got a bit of a beer gut to lose yet.

not sure about lock but id like to see him in the backrow along with maubs. The fact that he is now far more mobile and fit is only a plus. Between those 2 we have 2 young players who have enough experience to take their games to the next level and shoulder the workload that the loss of the likes of fitz has created. Seems perfect for myles (backrow) - he can put his massive defensive workrate to good use whilst acting as almost a third frontrower giving the pack that extra size and grunt and go forward when the going may get tough in some encounters with other big NRL packs. This is how I see the pack shaping up:
                          8. FPN
                          9. Jaubs
                          10. Ryles
                          11. Myles
                          12.
                          13. Maubs

                          14. Paea
                          15. JWH
                          16. Symonds/Cherrington
                          17. Jones

I believe that there is one spot up for grabs in the pack. I have left a backrow spot vacant as I believe ideally thats what needs to be filled however imo, between symonds, cherro, conn, kennedy and masoe we need to fill 2 spots being an interchange spot (the one symonds and cherro occupy in the side above) and that backrow spot. Whether this means that either symonds or cherro move into the backrow to start with someone like kennedy or masoe onto the bench for some extra size and grunt or whether the likes of conn or even guerra make the seamless transition into that 12 jumper to me is still up in the air. I see symonds or cherro as the ideal to slot in there as both bring an outstanding attacking dimension in particular to our pack and backrow in different ways (cherro as the destroyer and symonds as the skillful hole-runner) but i think that maybe that would leave our starting pack a little too raw so maybe a conn in the starting backrow at least intially until the likes of cherro and symonds in particular as well as kennedy and masoe prove they are up to first grade (starting) standard on a more consistent and definitive basis.

                          Backline:
                          1. Carney
                          2. Graham
                          3. Perrett
                          4. Williamson
                          5. Miniciello
                          6. Anasta
                          7. Pearce

I see this as the ideal. Allow carney a free role which i think he will adapt to seamlessly defensively in particular as in an attacking sense it is his ideal role at least for the time being until ofcourse anasta retires/leaves accomodating a place in the halves. Id like to see graham and perrett down the left interchanging with one another seeing as both are capable in both positions to throw the defence something different every so often with anasta defending inside them for some size and strength. Williamson as the bolter i think is key. We need a genuine strike weapon and i think the kid has what it takes. PLaying inside mini should be the ideal for him as well as mini's advice on and off the field would be a great help for him. There was however talk on here that ryan may not be available for next year - a year off or something so in that case then i see SKD as the next in line to play a similar sort of role inside mini.

                          Verdict:
Not bad at all. Some real strengths about the side but still definite room for improvement. In terms of 2011 purchases; although early in the peice I see the need for a genuine strike weapon as paramount - inu would be my pick - excelled under smith, off contract and likely to be forced out at parra due to their roster and the cap. Also an experienced backrower to wear the vacant '12' jumper in the pack i named above for a few years whilst the youngsters find their feet. My ideal fit would be waterhouse in terms of age, attributes and playing style but im not sure of his contract details. If not him then someone of a similar age and playing style would suffice for that extra experience, leadership and grunt. Having lost friend a replacement at hooker must be sought unless of course jaubs lives up to his potential/hype and jones fulfills his potential and makes a tidy transition to more of a hooking role ala craig wing. Id love for us to offer friend a contract however once he is re-registered with the NRL/over his issues - very talented player, loves the club and a real asset if he can sort out his offfield misdemeanours. I believe by losing mason in particular as well as either mini or braith we should free up the necessary funds the make such acquisitons.

                            Myles = New Fitzy

shave his head and teach him to kick goals
I support two NRL teams, the Roosters and whoevers playing Souths
