  • Rugby League Week - bits and pieces

Mitch Pearce and SKD could/should reach 200 games for the club this year. On quick calculation Mitch will do it in round 18 making him the youngest ever to get to 200 games-breaking the record of none other than Craig Wing (who did it at 26 yrs 190 odd days). Mitch will be 26 and about 3 months. Something I have always respected of Pearce is his durability-especially for a halfback who 'overall' doesn't shirk his duties-particularly as a defensive halfback. SKD in round 24 will get his 200 hopefully...

Maloney needs only 14 points to become only 10th rooster to score 500 points for chooks.

Has a 'positive' write up about Marty coming back to the club-with the title 'I never should have left'. Talks about off field things getting to him and gave massive praise to Canavan and Robbo specifically-"realised what guys like Canavan and Robbo are gentleman". Touched on being coached by the walker brothers. I have had a small amount to do with one of walker brothers through school boy footy and being an Ipswich jets and roosters fan had few conversations about Marty-he (one of walkers) couldn't speak highly enough of Marty.

Outside of that only thing half interesting I found was reading about Konrad Hurrell's injury-effectively the bone in his wrist was dead/dying. That was interesting.

    Happy New Year

Pearcey's on track to being the most capped player ever, if he continues his run of form he'll be very deserved of such an honour.

I'm a big fan of Pearce and early on I told anyone who listened that he'd be better than Johns (one-eyed rooster). I just think the one thing he lacks at the moment is the ability to close a game. Smith, cronk, Thurston all know how to do it. The great ones are the ones who want the ball when the game is on the line. Once he nails that he can be a true great for the club. He's a very solid and well rounded player.

I don't know if he'll be better then Johns but if he keeps his form up he'll definitely be up there with Thurston and Cronk. When he's on he certainly gives them a run for their money.

I actually predicted him to get the Dally M last year based off just how sharp he looked in the 9's, whilst I was way off, his end to the season gives me enough hope for me to back him to get it this season.

Pearce finally worked out that his running game is his biggest weapon.

Could be a big year for him.

              Bigchook is right.

The semi against Penrith is a case in point. He scored that individual try to get us ahead, then we fluffed the game from there.

I know others contributed like Maloney missing the field goal, Jennings and mini, but to me the half back owns that result and despite his excellent form, I think he failed to close that one out.

That said, I'm a massive fan and always have been. Can't wait to see his continued development thus year.

For Mitch to be as good as Johns

He would have to get away with murder off the field....

I love the way Mitch plays the game, very passionate and extremely tough. In saying that he should never get mentioned in the same breath as Johns as a footballer. ..... at this stage anyway.

Who knows?? If Pearce steers us to a premiership or 2 in the next 3 or 4 years he might deserve to be mentioned alongside the truly great halves. Imo I think he is capable of eclipsing Cronk's career. JT and Johns are the only truly great 21st century halves and Shaun Johnson is the other half who I think could join that select group.

I think he will come into his own over the next 4 or 5 years, I am really looking forward to what he can do this year as he seems to finally laid his demons to rest after the night club incident and believe he can swing a game on the field after spending time with that mentor (whose name escapes me).

I think Thurston is a truly complete footballer. But until he steers his team to a premiership he can't be mentioned in the upper echelon. His heroics at origin and national level have always been playing with the best rosters. Even the cowboys have had the squad to win the comp but the lack of a premiership is telling. 2012-2013 was their best chance.

Alan Bell is the mentor. 72 years if age, not sure of his background in the game but obviously knows his stuff.

                            I agree.
This year we'll see if that area of his game can improve.
Imagine him and Fittler as a halves pairing?
                            I rate Pearce above Lam.

Disagree. Cowboys have never had the roster, the 'run' or luck to have been expects to win a premiership. If there is a player (up until last year) 'who carried his team' it was Thurston. I say that with respect to cowboys players past and present. He has never had a top line 6 or 9, and yes he had Bowen but he was injured more than not. In saying that, this year given bit of luck that all premiership teams need the cowboys should be top 4 comfortably.

If roosters don't win comp I'd move on with a NQ 'roosters' victory. Lol
