  • Joe Burgess - Rooster 2016

    http://www1.skysports.com/rugby-leag...ydney-roosters

Joe Burgess has decided to leave Wigan for Australia at the end of the 2015 Super League season after agreeing to join Sydney Roosters.

The 20-year-old winger, who burst onto the Super League scene in 2014, will be out of contract with the Warriors in the autumn and the club have failed to persuade him to sign a new deal.

"We did everything we could but he wants to experience the Sydney lifestyle," said Wigan's football general manager and director Kris Radlinski.

Widely regarded as one of the hottest properties in the game, Burgess played and scored against the Roosters in the World Club Challenge clash at the start of last season in Sydney.

Wigan-born Burgess, who came through the club's junior system, scored 23 tries in his first full season of Super League, including the Warriors' only touchdown in their Grand Final defeat by St Helens in October.

He went on to earn a place in the England squad for the Four Nations Series, but was a non-playing member of the squad.

Burgess, who has been handed Wigan's No 5 jersey for the new season, will be the latest high-profile player to switch from Super League to the NRL.

Seven members of the 24-strong England squad plied their trade in the NRL in 2014, including former Wigan full-back Sam Tomkins, and they have since been joined by former Hull KR hooker Josh Hodgson.

You'd think he won't be signing to play nsw cup so I'd say this all but spells the end of Tupou/SKD as Roosters' players at the end of the season

Wouldn't be surprised if both were gone.

It is very disappointing I find to potentially lose a loyal player such as Shaun "Skidsy" Kenny Dowall who loves our club dearly and has spent 10 years at our club and was on the way to break the top try scoring record, as well as young up and coming talent Daniel Tupou for players such as Blake Ferguson and Joe Burgess.

Tis old news rehashed from 6 months ago....

He had already made an agreement & Wigan have made another attempt at retaining him.

BRISBANE, Jan 23 AAP - The name may be familiar but the Sydney Roosters believe NRL fans will have seen nothing quite like exciting recruit Joe Burgess.
No relation to South Sydney's title-winning siblings, the 20-year-old Wigan winger has been tipped to create the same buzz as the other Burgess boys when he arrives in 2016.
Roosters recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan reckoned Burgess' three-year deal was such big news that they did well to keep a lid on it considering it was finalised six months ago but not officially released until Friday.
"We did well to keep it quiet," he told AAP.
"He will be a force, I have no doubt.
"He will be 22 when he comes out, it's the right age - he will be a perfect fit.
"He is clearly the most outstanding back in England.
"It's a real coup to have him here for three years."
At 19, Burgess scored 23 tries in his first full English Super League season, including Wigan's only four-pointer in their grand final loss to St Helens in October.
He earned a Four Nations nod and turned 20 on the flight over but was a non-playing squad member.
O'Sullivan could not wait for NRL fans to see what Burgess could do in the tri-colours.
"Ever since I first saw him I went 'wow'," he said.
"I went over to England and watched him play - I have very high hopes for him.
"He will toughen up as he gets older but his speed, presence, athleticism and try scoring ability is already top shelf."
O'Sullivan said an NRL switch was not a hard sell after Burgess scored against the Roosters in the 2014 World Club Challenge clash in Sydney.
"He had such a good time at Coogee during the World Club Challenge, the place sold itself," he said.
"He knows the area and he is keen for a crack."
Burgess will be the latest high-profile Super League player to make the NRL switch.
Canberra will this season welcome Hull KR hooker Josh Hodgson after he featured in England's Four Nations squad that boasted another seven NRL-based players.

What's wrong with Blake Ferguson and Joe burgess? This is the nature of the business. Skd wasn't playing for the love of the roosters. He was on one of the best contracts for a centre in the nrl 4 years ago. As for tupou.. He's done a great job for us and If he leaves he won't be hard done by us.. It will be so that he can achieve a massive pay day elsewhere.. Hey, we'll offer them 200k contracts if they want to play for love and loyalty. Whilst sometimes it's a shame to lose players because we've shared some highs and lows.. It's always going to happen. And as long as we don't lose the ones that we need to keep then we're doing the right thing to ensure our long term success. Sentiment doesn't win premierships.

Logically, I think you'll find it will be Toups then Jenko depending on how Nene and Fergo go.. But if Roger Leaves I think all will be retained.
