  • Roosters sign Willie Manu from UK

Tongan international Willie Manu has returned to the NRL almost a decade after he departed for the UK, having signed a one-year deal with the Sydney Roosters.

Manu debuted for the Wests Tigers in 2001, joined the Rabbitohs in 2004, played for the Dragons in 2005 then spent nine years at Castleford, Hull and St Helens, where he won a title last year.

The 34-year-old was unveiled in the Tricolours' Auckland Nines squad on Saturday.

He told Roosters TV he had been planning on returning to Australia anyway but when the chance to join the Roosters came up he jumped at it.

That's old news, been at Roosters for over a month. Plays in the backrow, played with Moa and fitzy in the ESL.

Lets hope he doesn't see first grade, if he does it means we have a heap of injuries! Was very steady before he left, you don't come good 10 years later. In my opinion a shit signing in an area where we have depth.

Surely by now people trust the Roosters coaching and recruitment staff. After all we have won the last two minor premierships. If they see value in Manu then that's good enough for me.

I would say they have a pretty good strike rate.

Remi wasn't that bad. He was certainly no Jordan Tansey. The problem was people were expecting massive things after the performances of Sam Moa and he wasn't in Moa's class.

Had his try counted in the riff finals game last year, we would have made the gf two years in a row.

Casty wasn't as bad as what people made him out to be on here. He just wasn't the next Sam Moa. Pretty good depth signing imo.

It's not a position we have depth in though. He also adds some variety to the squad given his abilty to offload and ball play.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if he gets good minutes on the right edge this year. Also played a bit of lock over in the Super League which is handy.

Just remember Casty lol. Willie is 34 yo and 179cm lol, can he play halfback.

Agreed. He wasn't signed as one of our next stars, he was signed as a depth player.

He did start for the team that won the Super League grandfinal last year, so for a depth signing it doesn't seem all that bad.

Thought he started on bench in the grand final.
