      Lewis isn’t going anywhere: Flanno

CRONULLA coach Shane Flanagan has ended speculation the club is trying to offload veteran forward Luke Lewis by naming him captain for the club’s Auckland Nines campaign.

Lewis has been linked to a possible exit from the Shire, but Flanagan told the Daily Telegraph this couldn’t be further from the truth.

He said the Origin and Test star has excelled this summer and he wanted to reward him with the honour of leading the Sharks’ Nines assault, kicking-off on January 31.

“Not a chance he is leaving, Luke has had an unreal off-season and he deserves to be named captain,” Flanagan said.

“I’ve been really impressed with his application at training, so that’s why I’ve rewarded him.

“Luke missed the Four Nations, which was disappointing for him.

“But he has had some surgery (hamstring) and his training has been very impressive.

“It feels like when he first arrived at the club in 2013. He had a great pre-season that year and it’s the same this year.

“It’s like he is a little kid again in terms of his enthusiasm, while his body is looking a treat.”

The Sharks qualified for the semi-finals in the inaugural Nines tournament last year and Flanagan is hoping his side can go one better in 2015.

“We’ll have a fair crack again this year,” he said.

“I’ve got some exciting backs like Valentine Holmes, Gerard Beale and Mitch Brown.

“They are those nines style of players and then we’ll throw some experienced names like Lewis too.

“He used to be a back as well, so he’ll be well suited.”
