Jake Friend hopes his unavailability for the start of the Roosters' premiership campaign won't affect his chances of captaining the club.
Friend is recovering from shoulder surgery and, while a definitive comeback date hasn't been set, the hooker is expected to be out for between eight and 10 weeks. It is the latest in a series of setbacks which began with a chest injury so serious there were concerns he could have died had the internal bleeding gone untreated for any longer. It's believed a subsequent staph infection was linked to that injury, a setback that postponed both shoulder surgery and his return date.
"I must have picked [staph] up in the hospital. It was a bit of a stuff around but it's all sorted so I can get the shoulder right now," he said.
"I was on some antibiotics, drips and then oral antibiotics for about four weeks. It was a bit of a bad process but it's all good.
"The ribs were a bit of a random thing. The shoulder - that's just footy. I don't think it was ever career-threatening, it was just about getting healthy and putting footy on the backburner until I was right. It's been thing after thing, a bit of a stuff around, but I'm feeling good now."
Friend's latest comeback will not be his greatest. He was forced to spend time out of the game for disciplinary reasons but has matured in his return, to the point he was appointed as one of four-vice captains alongside Mitchell Pearce, Boyd Cordner and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves last year. Some eyebrows were raised when then-chief executive Steve Noyce, now with the Central Coast Bears, predicted in 2011 Friend would one day captain the club. However, that could soon be fulfilled as coach Trent Robinson considers the quartet as a replacement for retired skipper Anthony Minichiello.
Friend hoped his absence in the opening months of the 2015 campaign would not count against him.
"I'd hope I would be considered, I'd love to captain that team," he said.
"There's a couple of other blokes that would like to do it also. We'll do what we can and see what happens."
Minichiello, speaking at the launch of the NRL's Community Carnival at Soldiers Point Settlement Public School, said Friend was a worthy candidate.
"He's definitely a leader amongst the group, everyone respects him out there when he's playing," Minichiello said.
"He's one of the options for sure. Robbo keeps everything close to his chest but I'm sure he has an idea. He just wanted to watch everyone over the pre-season to see how they all develop as leaders."

Perhaps by limiting the respect to on field in Mini's response, he's given us the reason why he is not going to be captain? Perhaps they are selecting based on respect in all areas, not just on field...
Perhaps I'm reading too much in...

Good chat with @sydneyroosters gun Jake Friend today - expecting to back from shoulder reco and staph infection between R8-10. #NRL
Gee i hope that matt mcilwrick can play. I know it's only the nines but From what I have seen from Mitch Williams , I have very moderate expectations. If worse comes to worse we may have to resort to our previous arrangement of Maubs/SOH for the rake spot.
Comment of the year:
Andrew Johns, Semi-Final vs North Queensland ,
"It's touched Lui's hand and travelled forward but that's not a knock on"

Micilwrick is a gun. I'm surprised Canberra let him go. He is a top defender and strong runner of the ball.
I watched them train this morning while my mum was having an eye op at St Vinnies.
Few things Jackson Hastings & Mitch Williams were training with the team both playing hooker.
Matt Mcilwrick & a group of players including Fergo, SKD, Kennedy & Jake Friend were being coached in the far corner by Robbo, Friend was playing 1st receiver & was putting up bombs in which Kennedy was catching them with SKD & Fergo following through.
Daniel Tupou & another Islander dude were doing sprints with the sprint coach who was telling Tupou not to stride out as much as what he was & Aiden Guerra wasn't training with the team he was 1 on 1 with Jonny Lewis doing pad work.
Guerra is looking so fit he has definitely put on size & I think will be lock. I asked him if he was injured in which he replied that he was having a light training session then I said to him "they need you to stay fit & healthy Aiden this year" which he replied I will do my best then I said "you have been our best forward for 3 years keep it up" he said "thanks mate".
There is no way in the wide world will Jackson Hastings play in the halves for the Roosters, he is bow legged & has no speed off the mark. RTS will start the season at FB if fit looks like Fergo & SKD will be interchanging between centre & wing if today is anything to go on.

I was stoked that they were training on a day I had 3 hours to burn. Ive seen the Roosters train probably 15 times in my 48 years & it's always pleasurable it's just so up close & personal with no one else around.
I actually went there hoping Mini would be there because I have this poster of Mini in cartoon style post the 2013 GF that I want him to sign because I am going to frame it & hang it in my man cave but he wasn't there but I still fully enjoyed seeing the team train.
