I noticed that Neil Henry also spun the "they weren't found in possession" line, but that was not the nature of this arrest. It wasn't a random search - they were being monitored. The response of the Titans and the NRL suggest that there is strong evidence.

the evidence is phone tapping. it was the off season for these guys and it should be dealt with in a civil way not in the nrl judiciary way. im not condoning drug taking but its not performance enhancing drugs, its a blow at birds bucks then the phone tapping was over birds wedding days. A few big fit boys letting their hair down. if news owned this team it would have gone away by now like the drongos night club incident rergarding coke and a girl in the mens with 3 drongos players.

the only real way to fix this for the tittans is to sign dce on a record wage, and rebuild. get rid of the hasbeens , semi retirees and move on.

Whether it's performance enhancing or not is irrelevant, it's illegal and I hope to god it get's dealt with in the most public of fashion as possible, these guys need to be named, shamed and jailed if proven guilty. Remember these guys do the rounds at schools as role models promoting health and education to our children.

The cocaine crisis comes just weeks after former State of Origin players Jason Smith and Matt Seers were charged with trafficking the drug.

Police will allege one of the syndicate’s kingpins was former Sydney Roosters rugby league player John Thomas.

Appearing under his real name of John Touma, the 49-year-old slipped quietly through Southport Magistrates Court on February 6, charged with supply and possession of cocaine.

One of the charges relates to supplying cocaine to former Roosters teammate John Tobin, a veteran of 125 first grade rugby league matches through the 70s and 80s.
Tobin has also been charged.

Thomas played just two first grade matches for the Roosters in 1986-87.

His Mermaid Waters home was the alleged scene of more than a dozen drug deals involving former North Sydney and Wests Tigers star Matt Seers in the latter part of last year.

Police allege both were involved in the same cartel as Smith, who was arrested last month in Toowoomba where he has taken over the running of a pub since winding up his decorated playing career.

Thomas will face Southport Magistrates Court again on March 11, five days after Hunt, Falloon and Dowling face the same court.

NRL chief executive Dave Smith has already launched another crackdown on player misbehaviour, pledging to rub serious off-field offenders out of the game for long periods.

He declared: “We are not going to let a few players wreck our image and brand”.

I've thought about these arrests quite a bit over the last couple of days.

I feel uncomfortable about a couple of things.

Sure, players like Birdy should know better. God knows he has seen enough trouble in his career. He would be crapping himself and he only has himself to blame. I know the guy personally and I like him. He just likes to party. So do a stack of guys in the NRL and here is my problem. I've seen young guys who weren't into the scene see the older players do it and they get stuck in cause that's what is being done. Prescription pills are rife as well.......it's hardly the professional NFL college type that David Smith is engineering in his out of touch mind. League is going backwards in terms of players being role models......they sign the autographs, pose for photos willingly whilst at the same time become more selfish than ever.

Gen. y , the calibre of boy League attracts........hardly college graduates. I think you will find more Polynesian, indigenous and poor white folk sons dominating the code over the next 10 years. I think it is relevant to point out that a lot of these kids have not focussed on education so there attitudes and perceptions are very very limited.

I also have a problem with the cops spending such huge amount of resources targetting footy players. Go catch some real criminals. How much did the asada witch hunt cost the taxpayer and where did it get us? The cops have a fascination with bringing footy players down. Get a life

It's a cops job.

The media is who brings it to attention and plasters these guys over the papers without any evidence. The media could go to any nightclub and out the average joe on the street, but there focus is on the league players, ironically they then want after match interviews with them, and are surprised when a player refuses.
