Manly better hope Jamie Lyon's knee injury isn't serious after the Sea Eagles folded under the absence of their skipper in losing 36-6 against the Roosters on Saturday night.
Lyon didn't return to the field after half-time, with Sea Eagles officials claiming the ice on his knee was "precautionary". Regardless, Manly's right defensive edge struggled in the absence of Lyon as they leaked 36 unanswered points in front of 3500 fans at Central Coast Stadium, with Roosters winger Daniel Tupou scoring two tries.
Michael Jennings looked sharp in the first half but Lyon quickly shot down any attacking opportunity. However it didn't take long for Jennings to create space after half-time, exposing Manly's defence. He got on the outside of his opposite to help Tupou score three minutes after half-time. From the kick-off set, Jennings again created havoc, racing 25 metres before fumbling the ball as he came into contact with the covering Manly defence.
Tupou had his second try when he raced 80 metres from the scrum to extend the Roosters' lead to 18. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck had another, again finding room where Lyon would normally defend, with Peta Hiku and Tony Satini all spending time as fill-ins. Veteran back-rower Willie Manu celebrated his first appearance in Australia since 2005 with a late off-load helping Dylan Napa to score – again exposing Manly's right-side defensive edge.
A near full strength Roosters side – missing only co-captain Jake Friend – showed its class against a Manly side which was missing the likes of Steve Matai, Brenton Lawrence and Jamie Buhrer. Both No.7s stamped their class on the game, with strong 60-minute stints. While Daly Cherry-Evans' contract negotiations might be dragging on, the Manly halfback showed no signs of being distracted when he laid on the Sea Eagles' first points with a well-timed cut-out pass finding winger Hiku to open the scoring after 10 minutes.
The Roosters withstood a weight of territory in the opening exchanges, coupled by a caning in the penalty count early. With the Roosters battling to make any real dent in the defence, it was left to Mitchell Pearce to take control. The newly appointed co-captain dummied to his outside before slicing through the Sea Eagles' defence, carrying three defenders over the tryline to race 10 metres to score and draw the scores level at 6-6 in the 27th minute.
An errant kick by Cherry-Evans went out on the full to allow the Roosters to build more pressure. From that set, Roosters big man Kane Evans scored when he stormed onto a pass from back-up rake Mitchell Aubusson to give the Roosters a 12-6 half-time lead. Aubusson had a long stint at dummy half, with Canberra recruit Matt McIlwrick starting the game at hooker in Friend's absence.
Blake Ferguson was solid in his first real test against an NRL side while teammates, including Evans, James Maloney and Aidan Guerra, were among the Roosters' best. Manly back-rower Tom Symonds hyper-extended his elbow and will have scans on Monday.
Roosters 36: Tries: Daniel Tupou 2, Mitchell Pearce, Kane Evans, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Dylan Napa Goals: James Maloney 6
Sea Eagles: 6 Try: Peta Hiku. Goal: Jamie Lyon
