    Well canberra................Get stuffed !

Canberra Raiders say they will welcome Todd Carney back to the club
    By Stuart Honeysett
March 16, 2010 .Canberra appear to have finally forgiven Todd Carney for his sins, admitting they would be happy for the Sydney Roosters fullback to return to the Raiders.

Carney, sacked by Canberra in 2008 for a series of alcohol-related offences, turned in a man-of-the-match performance against South Sydney on Sunday in his first game back in the NRL.

He is contracted at Bondi Junction for three years, but Raiders chairman John McIntyre admitted the club would be happy to accommodate Carney if he was interested in returning to the Green Machine.

"You don't burn bridges in this game and the door's always open," McIntyre said.

"I've always known that there was a potential risk that he could come back to haunt us. If he keeps going the way he is, that may well happen, but we're certainly not death-riding the fellow."

Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce said Carney was only one game into a deal that didn't expire until the end of 2012.

However, he admitted he was happy Carney had his life under control, with the former wild child making a new-year pact with some of his teammates, including Mitchell Pearce and Nate Myles, to stay off alcohol.

"The trick in life is learning from your mistakes, isn't it?" Noyce said.

"Unfortunately, from time to time we all make mistakes and the smart people will learn from them."

McIntyre, who was part of the board that sacked Carney after he refused to adhere to strict alcohol guidelines the club wanted in his contract, said he was happy the former star player had his life back under control.

After he was sacked by Canberra, the NRL said it would not register a contract for Carney if another club tried to sign him for the 2009 season, forcing him to ply his trade as a park footballer in the far north Queensland town of Atherton.

He returned to the NRL with the Roosters, switching from the halves to fullback. Now his trial form and the performance in the opening round against the Rabbitohs make him an early contender for buy of the season.

Although he has had no contact with Carney since the club sacked him, McIntyre said he would be happy to shake his hand when the two clubs faced each other in April.

"Of course we're happy for him - he's a talent," McIntyre said.

McIntyre said Carney would one day don the green and gold for Australia, but a more probable scenario was an appearance in the sky blue of New South Wales this season.

If early form is any guide, Carney could definitely be part of the Blues' bid to end their four-year Origin drought.

Great the Roosters put in all the hard work and now the raiders would like him to come straight back, talk about loyalty. They shafted him and expect him to forgive and forget.

I reckon Carney will be a have two contracts with the Roosters, this 3 year one which takes him to 26, then a 5 year one which will see him carried off the field in Red White and Blue in his last game in the NRL.......do you reckon Penrith didnt want Freddy back?? Same thing will happen here. Hes seen the light.

I'm a Rooster through and through.....but man you are so wrong its not funny.

You talk about all 'our' hard work, the lack of loyalty from the Raiders and you say they shafted him. Do you actually remember what happened?

Carney was a prodigious junior talent who had been nurtured by the Raiders from a young age. They have certainly put more work into him then our 12 months of 'work'........particularly when you consider we never actually did anything. Mick Nasser and his family deserve far more credit then the Sydney Roosters.

As for loyalty....Carney got caught drink driving (when unlicenced) and did a runner from police with another young footballer Steve Irwin. I think it was in 2006 or 2007. Irwin got sacked and they retained Carney, despite the fact Carney was the driver of the vehicle. Carney's list of indiscretions at the Raiders is far longer than the drink driving and urinating on a mate's mate charges. There has been a lot they have been able to sweep under the carpet because of the small town nature of Canberra.

As for being shafted......Canberra came up with a 5 point plan to try and both rehabilitate and also retain Carney in the capital. Carney said no thank you, primarily because he believed he could get a big money deal in the UK. However, his visa application was denied meaning he was then left with no choice but to stay in Australia and try and get some help with his demons.

Don't for a minute think that we have done as much for Carney as what Canberra have. They bent over backwards to try and keep him because they realised what a special talent he was. But you know how it is, sometimes tough love is the best love and Carney's sacking has probably been the best thing that happened to him.

I for one feel very sorry for the Raiders, a struggling club who finally produce a superstar and then through no fault of their own they are forced to watch him ply his trade elsewhere.

Carney hasnt done anything worse than a hundred other players in the NRL have done, including FREDDY, only difference is he got caught.

was going to say something similar (if not a lot shorter ) Canberra did their best to do the right thing by Carnage. He just didnt want to be helped at that point.

Ridiculously stupid statement.1STLY He is a Canberra Junior 2NDLY Canberra gave him plenty of chances At one stage Carney refused to give up the grog. After a string of incidents as long as your arm and a handful of 2nd chances Canberra had no choice but to do what they did. 3rdly I actually feel sorry for Canberra in all of this and through no fault of there own they lost the best player they have produced since Laurie Daley.

Great post. Here's to hoping that he doesn't feel guilt and feels like he owes something to Canberra ... eventually moving back.

This Pearce & Carney combo has the potential to be great.
