  • Buzz on BS - Again

    Hi Guys.
I've been lurking for a while. Good site - Melon cracks me up.
More words of wisdom from Buzz in todays Tellucrap.

PHIL Rothfield and Andrew Webster get fiery as they discuss Brian Smith and his new role as head coach at the Sydney Roosters.
WEBBY: Hello, Sports Editor-at-large. How is your old mate Brian Smith travelling?

BUZZ: He's going good. I saw them smash Parramatta in the trial up at Gosford and then do the same to Souths on Sunday. Nothing's changed - I've seen a lot of Brian Smith-coached teams play great footy in March. September and October have always been his issue.

WEBBY: There's some mail around that you don't win premierships in March. I know it's early days, but you cannot deny he has turned that club around.

BUZZ: Yeah, the same as he turned around Newcastle. He got rid of club legend Danny Buderus and let Clint Newton, Josh Perry and Anthony Quinn go, all of whom went on to win premierships. He used the money from those players to sign Danny Wicks and Chris Houston, who are now facing very serious drugs charges. Please don't tell me he's this great disciplinarian. He walked out on Newcastle mid-contract and left the joint in an absolute shambles.

WEBBY: Please. Like you can blame Smith for the Wicks-Houston situation. They have only been charged, incidentally. In Newcastle, he was acting on the command of the board. He was an easy target, for yourself and others. I've spent a bit of time around the Roosters during the off-season, and I can tell you some of those players are different blokes. Nate Myles, Mitchell Pearce in particular. The joint was a rabble - they have done a 180-degree turn and it was there for all of us to see on Sunday. Success in this game isn't just judged by premierships. As a Cronulla supporter, you should know that.

BUZZ: So you're blaming the board for dumping four good citizens and signing Wicks and Houston? That means you should give Nick Politis, Mark McInnes, Mark Bouris and the Roosters board the credit for turning the Roosters around. Make up your mind ... and I can do without your crack at the Sharks.

WEBBY: The Knights board told him to make changes, so he did. If the Roosters do well this year, they deserve credit for bringing Smith in, because they needed it. I'm more concerned about now, Buzz. It's a new club. They are fitter than they've ever looked, you've already suggested Carney and Pearce should be the NSW halves. Nate Myles is a walking advertisement for staying off the ink. It's early days and the real test comes when they lose four in a row. But to a player, the Roosters have been crediting the coach and say he's not the man they thought he was.

BUZZ: This debate is a walking advertisement for you getting yourself off the ink. Fair dinkum, you're not making a lot of sense. Brian Smith had total control of everything he did in Newcastle. It's outrageous that you're trying to blame the board. Yes, I agree that Carney, Pearce and Myles are going gangbusters. But mate, we've had one game.

WEBBY: I'm a teetotaller. You know that. So do you reckon I should back the Chooks to make the eight?

BUZZ: They've got to be some hope on what we've seen so far. Back them to make the eight, but not the premiership. Smithy's been coaching since 1984 and he's never won one.

WEBBY: I'm only after a return and I wouldn't expect them to win it this year after winning the wooden spoon the year before. I think you're way too harsh on the bloke. He wouldn't have been around for as long as he has unless he's got a clue. Not winning a premiership is the obvious thing to give it to him over, but as he's become older and mellower, I think you'll find he judges himself as a coach on other factors.

BUZZ: Don't you and Phillip Ronald Gould ever get tired of doing Brian's PR. I'm telling it as I see it. That's all. You're the one who wanted to debate Brian Smith today. It's my turn to choose the topic next week. Maybe we'll do Rick Stone. Do you and Gus even know he exists? He's the poor bugger mopping up in Newcastle. I thought he was coach of the round last weekend.

WEBBY: I'm not his PR man. I like good yarns, and what's been happening at the Roosters is a good yarn. When are you going to stop giving the Sharkies free kicks?

BUZZ: When they win the title ... see ya next week

I don't understand Rothfield at all.

He keeps bringing up Smith's no premiership record and saying he isn't a successful coach due to no wins, yet says the complete opposite for the Sharks.

Smithy's one of Goulds mates. Explains the poison from the Telegraph gibberer.

Rothfield has constant wet dreams about the Sharkies.

And hates the mighty roosters because of Gus.

The bloke is a cock head.

The players are the best judges of a coach's character and ability to mentor them.

Smith may have been viewed as a coach nobody wanted to play under in the past but things may have changed over the years.

Given the same talent Bennett, Stuart, Sheens and Bellamy have had and he may have won a comp by now.

                        Time will tell.
