Surely after today Smith can see that Carney isnt and never will be a fullback. Sure its great to have a playmaker at fullback blah blah blah but give me a fullback that is a great defender, a great kick returner and good at fielding kicks anyday of the week. Perrett or Mini should be fullback. Cant see this obsession with having a 5/8th playing fullback. I mean when you look at it the best two fullbacks in the game in slater and Hayne arent 5/8ths and their strengths certainly arent playmaking
I agree Dolphin, no such thing as a good defensive fullback these days. It's all about what you can do in attack... give me Luke Philips any day of the week.

Although in saying that if Brian Smith has committed himself (which he has) to playing Carney at fullback he deserves at least an extended run... one bad game shouldn't be enough to write off the whole experiment. I guess the biggest question is where do we put Anasta...?

Probably is on well over 300k, he's a great 5/8 and would be at any other club just that we've never learnt about having a well balanced squad. If it's not too many backrowers and not enough props it's too many halves and not enough centres.

Carney was always a risky signing because 5/8 is his position and I don't think lock is Braith's... we need our best defenders in the middle of the ruck, Anasta has never proven this and it'd be a massive risk to take.

The problem is BOTH Carney and Braith are 5/8. Thats the problem.

Playing one in 5/8 means your playing the other out of position.

The other point many seem to forget is Anasta is our CAPTAIN. CAPTAIN OF THE PROUND RW&B!

Can we just play our captain out of position?

I have nothing against Braith, in fact I have nothing but admiration for him. He should be a club hero for all the performances he has put in for us in such dire times but instead we bag him and try to shaft him because we've got the next big thing even though he's done thing for this club and shown nothing but disrespect for his last one.

Although what it comes down to for me in the end is that Braith will make a better lock than Carney will a fullback. But how do you get rid of Myles who has been as good as a new signing in that position? Which backrower then misses out because we play Braith at lock... JWH, Symonds, Myles, Maubs? Then there's Cordner and Cherrington coming through next season. Shifting Anasta to lock seems like the logical answer but we've already got plenty who could do a better job than him there, players whose natural position is actually in the backrow.

Then maybe Braith has to miss out

I think most of the people wanting Carney at 5/8 were calling for Carney to play 5/8 from day 1. Me included and I have seen nothing this season that changes my mind.. For next season I would definitely not offer contracts to Mini, Anasta and J Aubbusson (unless we are desperate and cannot sign a decent dummy half).

Which is what I think will eventually happen although at the moment he is club captain and as such will always hold a spot in the starting side. For a club that's trying to rebuild their image the last thing they want to do is release their club captain early from his contract even though it might be the best thing to do...

Isn't he off contract at seasons end? I know what you are saying about clubs image but performances are more important.. I think for the money he is on, he should be standing up a bit more in games like this and settling the players down. I think he has a tendancy to actually lose composure in pressure situations..

I would make signing a good fullback a priority, I think the Wingers can take care of themselves.. You don't waste a lot of cap space on Wingers.. Also a dummy half with some spark and another front rower who can play some decent game time.

Anasta should be the 5/8.....for Newtown.

Anasta is very good at avoiding scrutiny for his complete lack of spark in attack. He defended well yesterday and did well to score off that bomb.

But when you see what they each do with ball in hand it becomes apparent that Carney is twice the 5/8 that Anasta is.

If Anasta stays at 5/8, we don't make the 8

i didnt think guerra went too bad without doing anything special, and think jaubs should start, not sold on koops at all

but i still think braith 6 and carney 1, theres not much difference in attack anyway, when carney wants the ball he can still get the ball, just wasnt looking for it much today imo
MAtey, id like to agree with you on this. Last year i wasnt a fan of koops and im still not. Jaubs should be starting at hooker every week.
