  • Jake Friend

I've been informed Jake Friend has returned to start training with the NYC team and MAY be available for selection in the NYC, although it wasn't confirmed to me. I was told he isn't training with first grade and won't be playing NRL this year. But it is great news to here young Jake is back and hopefully he can be made available to play in our NYC side, so that he is not lost to the game. Good luck to the kid.

Agreed. Great move. I still think this kid will be a top shelf player. Very tough. Hope he has his head right. He has a few of 'the reformed' to use as role models. I hope he realises what he needs to do and puts his head down and does it.

I think with so many of our players in the same situation that they ALL need to stay strong and stay out of trouble. Strength in unity. If one falls, so might our house of cards.

Good news Footy. Thanks for the info and keep us posted with further developments. I hope the kid take this opportunity with both hands and puts the past behind him. Good luck Jake.

Will be interesting if we have a few injuries in that position.

If we continue to lose back rowers, we may be able to use Jake as hooker and Jaubs in the back row. It would leave us with a small pack, but we may not have many options soon with the current rate of attrition. A couple of times last year they were on the field together and our defence looked improved (not that that was hard).

Does anyone know what his contract position is? I.e. did we terminate his contract or are we still paying him with those payments still counting to our salary cap?

From memory, I thought we terminated his contract, so if he is going to play with us again, it would be under a new contract.

interesting you say this because i actually floated the idea of jaubs as a lock last year and i can see where you are coming from. He can share the hooking duties with friend which would make us highly dynamic around the ruck; he would also make our pack highly mobile from lock and has great general ball skills and defensive attributes. My only qualm is that i dont think he has the size to be able to cart the ball forward effectively and with his brother on one edge, we are starting to look a little flimsy up front imo. The best suggestion i can muster is having jaubs start the match and friend come on for one of our prop forwards pushing myles into a prop type role around the 20 - 25 min mark and allow jaubs and friend to operate dually around the ruck.

Melbourne use Hinchcliffe in a similar type of role. Comes on and plays lock/backrow....tidies up in defence around the rucks, supports Smith at dummy half. He rarely takes a one out run, usually two passes wide, often as a support player hitting a hole off a bigger man.

                    Jaubs is no backrower

                    Hooker is his only spot

only needs to be a minimal contract atm, with a bigger one for next season if all well, or even an incentive based one in case hes needed for fg?

I'd give him an NYC based contract for the remainder of the year, and wouldn't consider promoting him to first grade, no matter how many injuries.

That way he gets to play some footy, but doesn't get the benefits that come with playing NRL.

A new contract for 2011 and forward can be negotiated in the back half of the 2010 season.

Don't see the point in handing the kid too much too soon. He can use 2010 as a learning curve with the ambition and expection to play NRL in 2011. And it allows him to continue his rehab/counselling and hopefully finish his court appearances without the pressure associated with NRL football.

Hooker isn't even his favoured position, in the halves is.

Jaubs could pull off the defensive lock no worries at all - but there's plenty in front of him.

don't care what his "favourite" position is

he's no NRL halfback, second rower, or lock

he's a moderate NRL standard number 9, and that's all

Precisely, ala Dallas Johnson, who i'm sure Jaubs would have learnt plenty from whilst playing at the Storm.
