  • Watching that game last night

Brought home the reality of how far we've fallen as a premiership force. Seeing the team against the Knights and with the intensity in which the game was played makes me wonder whenever we will reach those dizzy heights again. We are just a poor imitation of that side that wore the rw and b in 2000. Sad isn't it.

I was going to post something very similar.

Except I was going to focus more on the fact that that game demonstrated exactly what a real 5/8 should be doing.

Challenging the line and actually making breaks, short balls at the line putting blokes into holes, long balls to the outside backs early enough so they have room to move, quality kicking and the occasional bomb.

Not "trying hard" and putting up bombs.

And that team had players like

Rubin, Dancing Dallas, Myles, Burns, Lomi and Rigon - no superstars there !

It was a much scrappier game back then and players weren't as athletically gifted as they are today. Half of the blokes couldn't throw a proper spiral. Also, you could tell the difference of a slow ruck. Defence was right up in your face, with next to no room to operate.

It's a much more level playing field these days with each player strong and very quick.

One thing i noticed is just how much of an underrated player Butterfield was. Always played at 100 km/h.

I prefered the style of footy in 2000 to the stuff we have these days.

Dancing Dallas had a blinder. Would take him in this team any day. At least he has some skill with the ball.

Freddy made Robert Miles look like an immortal.

I said the same thing to my flat mate.

There seemed to be a lot more ball movement and less emphasis on structure and defence.

Yep, except there's this Zoolander looking bloke that seems to somehow snaffle the #6 jumper every week. Maybe Carney needs to run into the change rooms first and grab it.

Adrian Lam was one of the best exponents of the short ball.

How many players can do that these days?

There was much more football played then so it's a no brainer if you ask me.

I lament about the current style of football and generally don't enjoy it as much.
But then comes a game like the Manly/Eels one on Monday night, that was a cracker.

Pity its only every now and then the good ones come along
