  • Why a 4 year contract is bad business

    Believe it or not,

    Ive seen many a coach.

The hard arses, the "best mate", the tactitian, the motivator.

All of them have their strengths and their weaknesses.

To me its all about timing.
The best administrators need to make the right decisions at any given time for what is needed.

We sign a man who has never won a comp in 21 years of trying.
We sign him on the basis of a Phil Gould recommendation who sees him as some replacement for the pariah, Fittler.

I just know in my bones it is the wrong decision.
Not for choice, just for the duration.

I will guarantee that the best year Smith has with our beloved club is 2014.
Just in time to renew his contract.
We might finish second, third or fourth.

Then the merry go round goes round again.

If this happens, I will have lost all respect for Nick Politis.
    Word.
And if it does, for the first time in my life I will ask for his head.
Because if you want to sign a man who has never won a comp in 21 years of trying it better be in the first 4 years of his ****ing contract.
    barbarian ......arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!

As long as he makes them competitive, I don't care.

Get the team into the top 8 each year and I'll be happy.

So you're happy at the moment?

        I'm happier than last year.

When we get rid of some deadwood, I will be even happier.

The one thing is, at least they are not smiling after a loss like last year.

A change of culture takes a long time. We're sitting on a goldmine in Pearce and Carney. Myles and Maubs are great, some promising youngsters.
This is just about what I expected for this year. I thought were are going to be on the verge of making the 8 or just missing out.

        What were you expecting?

Having success in 3 or 4 years would have nothing to do with building a team in that time.

Kinda makes losing a couple of GFs not seem that bad after all

              You may be right Trewella..

I am going to reserve my judgement for the time being..

Smith is only a few months into this "4 year contract"..We have most definately improved from last year..

Am I happy? No way, after last weeks effort. Our attitude was way off, and that is down to Smith..

The fact that he knows that it was unacceptable is a good thing...

I do think you are prejudice when it comes to Smith for what ever reason that may be...

He has inherited a team with about 6 First Grade quality players.. The rest belong playing in the park, of course it will take time to build success..

Unfortunately most teams are stacked with players that belong in park footy. The depth of talent just isn't there these days.

I remember watching park footy at Waverley Oval in the mid to late 80s. The standard in A Grade was very high, with many ex first graders running around along with the usual piss heads that never made it due to lack of desire or discipline.

It's a shame that it has got to this level today.

Me thinks Trewhella is either Lam or Lams shaft target.

hey trewhellawanka, one thing I have learnt is never pay attention to someone who supports a club and works for another and a basket case of a club at that and then spruiking the credentials of a dud coach from another club.. The Dragon's Toyota Cup side are running 13th lol with the best junior nursery in the league. I guess a massive accomplishment given his performance at the Roosters taking them to a spoon. I am sure you have better credentials at identifying a coach than Phil Gould.. I am sure your resume out does his..

Are you so unhappy at the moment? I am not overjoyed, however sitting middle of the table at the moment is not to bad. What sort of expectations did you have for the team this year?

To me a realist would hope top sneak into the 8 at best.

Smithers is like Gibson....he will leave this club in a better state than he inherited. When Smith decides to call it a day Easts will be a constant premiership threat.
