Sorry Trew, but if you think a 3 year contract is great it’s not that much of a stretch to embrace a 4 year one, seriously. And as for your wild assumption that he collaborates and surrounds himself with people that don’t rate him I find totally unfathomable. If Smith was to surround himself with people that “don’t rate him”, question him and his decisions, great! It means we have true collaboration within the coaching staff. On the contrary, if he was that bad a coach he would surround himself with sycophants?

I think you’ve gone off too early, but then time will tell.

      Chook.
No, of course I expect him to hire staff that are on his team.
      That is not my point.

My point is the fact that he has been in the game for 21 years, a true survivor.
What he has not done is establish a personal legacy ANYWHERE.

Unlike Bennett who will leave his mark personally wherever he goes.
      His ex players love him.
      His ex staff respect him.

The same cannot be said for Smithy, and this is part of his unfortunate personality.

      Bennet 7 premierships.
      Smith 0 premeirships.
      barbarian ......arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!

Fair points. However I'm hoping he'll break his drought and build his legacy with us.

He won us a GF and is the last NSW coach to win Origin... gets my respect. Bellamy (who people talk up... why?) Lost With virtually the same team that Sticky won with... he's then gone on to lose everything else (including having a serious salary cap breach... 'sif he didn't know!!)
Sticky has made a fool of himself since, but he knows how to win a GF + Origin. I back him to lead us to Origin victory again and redeem himself.

People love to associate themselves with success...
Smith comes across as being a bit shy/nervous (just me?) I find shy/nervous people often know their $hit better but get rattled and blamed easily when things go wrong. More confident or outspoken guys (Gus, Wayne... Alan Jones FFS) somehow convince people the success belongs to them and the failures... what failures?
                - Gus didn't fail to get the Roosters a GF?
                - Wayne didn't choke during the '87 final with the Green machine?
                - Jones didn't get a wooden spoon as a League coach, leading to the folding of Balmain from the comp?

Smith sits it out and gives rubbish teams a shot at GF glory. He'll have a bunch of mongrels up against Wayne's pedigree Origin stock and lose, but rather than people remembering "oh but he got us to a GF which was beyond our dreams last season!!!" They just remember that we lost and blame him.

Fact is our team isn't that good, but he's given us belief in ourselves. Unfortunately that belief seems to be getting to our heads at the moment and costing us big time.

ism I can see that you are genuine but if you think for one minute that Brian Smith is shy or nervous, then you are misled.

Brian is like the rest of your list, a very self serving individual.

He just has a different style.

He is a school teacher who is a multi millionaire.
                  That is great lip service.

A bit like comparing the jockey of a short-priced favourite to other jockeys in the same race. Bennett has always ridden the favourite.

Let's see how he goes coaching an average team next year.

Exactly. According to the Phil Rothfield mentality, George Moore was a rubbish jockey because he never won a Melbourne Cup.

Let's face it, Brain will be gone halfway through next year when his school teacher turned cool act and lack of a premiership sees Uncle Nick usher him out the door

Why are we even discussing Smith's performance? He took us from dead last to the Grand Final in a season, and we have lost only 3 games so far. The players are the ones who have the problem, with their inability to catch a ball, be patient and give away penalty after penalty after penalty a real concern. They can come good, but they need a good kick up the arse.
