  • NRL fines Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith for referees comments

Sydney Roosters have been issued with a $5000 breach notice over comments coach Brian Smith allegedly made to referees at half-time in the NRL club's win over Canberra.

The league says Smith directed comments on the penalty count to whistleblowers Ben Cummins and Tony De Las Heras during the break in the Canberra Stadium match, won 22-12 by the Roosters.

"Reports from the referees and the ground manager confirmed the comments were directed against the officials as they walked towards their change room and related to the penalty count in the match," the NRL said in a statement.

The league said clubs had been warned in May after a number of incidents where club officials had gone close to breaching the rules relating to match officials.

"We can't have a situation where coaches or club officials make comments to referees on game day, particularly when the match is still in progress," NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said.

"There are plenty of opportunities for clubs to voice their disagreement with refereeing decisions but the time to pursue these is not when emotions take over at a match."

I don't recall Canberra getting many, if any, penalties in the second half. That surely must be worth a few Gorillas

If that's the case, shouldn't Furner be receiving his warning in the mail too?

Couldn't agree more. It was so frustrating last year listening to Freddie dance around the subject when it was obvious we were copping some bum decisions

This part in bold puzzles me.......after the game is too late to voice an opinion ! it was blatant incompetence by Cummins and de las heras.

Not that Brian's spray helped, we only received one penalty for the full 80 minutes.

Note to Smithy: Approach the refs BEFORE kick-off and blow them up whether we are going to be given a fair go.

Bill Harrigan mentioned on Talkin' Sport yesterday that he could see atleast 4 penalties that should have been called in our favour. I think the referees should've be questioned after the game as to why they didn't call the penalties. Coming out and saying Yes there should have been some penalties blown and leave it at that is not good enough. Does Cummins have a problem with us since the "You're off your head" incidient?

                              They are a protected species.
