  • Jake Friend

Forgive me if there's already a thread about him recently, I check in here semi-regularly and can't remember one.

But this guy hitting form has been big for us. We look like such a better team with him at 9, I doubt we would have won today or last week without him.

We might give this comp a shake if our outside backs can get their defense together.

It's time Friend became an 80 minute player, he's good enough and he goes all day.

Welcome mate and yes, agreed, Jake has been very very good.
Your point about the outside backs is an excellent one too.

There were a lot who said he should have sat out the year to learn his lesson.
He could have been playing for the Dragons if we took that stance.
If he can play 80 minutes and free up that bench spot taken by Koups (who plays the last 10 minutes these days) by Masoe or Symonds then we will get that few percentage better.
The right side is a major problem in defense but I can't see Smithy splitting SKD and Perrett.

Agreed. As much as they annoy me at times, the right side has been our best and worst side of the field almost simultaenously this year. In attack we have been doing most of the damage down that edge prior to shifting anasta to backrow playing on that left edge which has made it more potent as well as bringing in linnett and leilua who have made big differences to our left edge attack. imo they are worth persisting with and will deveop into a solid but potent pairing in time which is important. A team with superstars all across the field end up like the storm, well over the cap. Having a couple of guys like pez and SKD who on their days are truly superstars however are error proned and can make a lot of silly mistakes, their asking price comes down a bit and they are both greatly underrated much like maubs.

Jakes work when he gets passes flopped back to him and links with support is great and seems to be going under the radar here.

he was instrumental in setting up pearce in carney's first try.

seems to do all the basic right, which is what we need.

                  His tackling rate is Bonnetti-esque.

Yep 80 minutes from Jake was a big factor.

AND the 42 farkin tackles! almost double the next best player on the park (Ryles).

Twelve months ago Cogburn labelled him a dud.

Interesting that he hasn't surfaced for a month.

Yep, coach Smith acknowledged his massive effort in the post match conference.

Jake's understanding with our 6 & 7 is improving with each game.
