  • Roosters' other Carney ready to crow

Sydney Roosters NRL recruit Justin Carney doesn't paint a pretty picture of how he looked and felt during his darkest time.

"Half a bunged-up leg, an overweight fat gut and down in the dumps. I became this massive monster," said Bondi's latest Carney of the horrific injury he suffered playing for Canberra in 2009, which nearly destroyed him, physically and mentally.

"You don't like seeing yourself in the mirror, I'll tell you. I wasn't feeling great."

The flying winger scored two tries for the Raiders on debut against Brisbane in 2008, and was identified as one of the game's brightest stars in the inaugural Toyota Cup team of the same year.

Carney scored seven tries in 2009, before his season was ended in round 17 when he snapped the tibia and fractured the fibula in his right leg.

The break was so severe the then 20-year-old went into shock and medical staff were forced to administer morphine before stretchering him from the field.

Facing six months on the sidelines, Carney freely admits he didn't do his rehabilitation justice.

Carney ate and drank too much, and took a seamless return to health for granted.

He ballooned out to more than 110kg - 13kg above his playing weight - and the lightning quick and ox-like Carney was a shadow of his former self.

He never made it back into first grade for the Raiders and languished in their Queensland Cup team for the remainder of 2010.

Carney has revealed he was having some very dark thoughts and was close to giving it all away and heading home to Nyngan.

Stuck in a funk, he signed with the Roosters, desperate for a turnaround.

"I was getting overweight pretty quick not running. I've just got that physique I suppose," recalled Carney.

"I went out and being stupid and I got a bit too comfy. I got into that comfort zone where I was mucking up a bit, I wasn't going on like an idiot ... but in the back of my mind I knew I hadn't given myself the best opportunity to do it.

"You're lacking confidence and you want to improve but you just can't.

"I wasn't planning much for the following year, I'll tell you. I was going to go home. It wasn't a good time, but I'm here now."

Carney said he feels more at home at the Roosters than he's been in his life, and that new coach Brian Smith has restored his confidence.

Now he's shooting for a starting spot in the backline for round one.

"I'm heading in the right direction preparing myself for the season," he said.

    "Everything's just fallen into place."

he actually started out as a lock forward (as his build and tackling technique suggest) then the raiders attempted to turn him into a hooker but he didnt quite have the ball skills to play there so the alternative became centre or wing due to his pace and footwork which is where he has excelled ever since. Really good signing imo.

the icing on the cake during this pre-season now for mine would be if we offered graham to desparate parramatta and then offered to take fetuli talanoa off souths hands which would allow them to almost definitely sign inglis which would well and truly complete what is an excellent squad we are compiling and solve our left wing issues. it is something souths would definitely regret doing as well down the track and would be reluctant to do but even if i were in there position i would let go of talanoa in order to sign inglis

The latest I've heard is Beau Champion is the most likely to be dropped for GI. IMO he's a much better player than Talanoa but either would be great.

ive heard the same thing but i think maybe if we actually make the offer souths would be forced to take it. problem with champion is he is a genuine centre. i think he could be turned into a fullback potentially but we dont need a centre. if we got him it would force linnett/carney onto the wing which is not a good option - both are best suited to the centres and champion certainly isnt a winger

                Roz,
I've read elsewhere where you favour Talanoa but IMHO, i do not rate him one bit. In fact, i have been so critical of Fatso for extending his & Wesser's contract beyond 2010 (but that's Souffs all over & their problem).
When he hangs on to the ball Talanoa has raw power but his defense is atrocious. At times he is clueless. I wouldn't even have him playing for the Jets! I'd rather give Naughton or Carney a decent opportunity.

Talanoa is Lol Souff$ modern version of Shannon Hegarty, quick and strong, but hands like feet, and a turnstile.

                  A big NO for Talenoa.

fair enough and i conceed that he can be a bit of a lottery in terms of performance and in defence but he has stacks of potential and realistically is one of the few players we could probably get for good value given the circumstances. I think if he can be fine tuned, we could be looking at an absolutely dynamite acquisition as the kid is a real try scorer and has serious wheels. The player that i think we really missed out on this year was cooper vuna. this guy was in the shadow of uate for most of this year and rightfully so but on his day he is right up there and i dont think he would have been a break the bank sort of signing either. speed, try scoring, power and only 23 with so much footy already under his belt.

The two signing i would have made in hindsight were matt scott a couple of years ago when his form was down and he was off contract (we could have picked him up for good value just before his peak which was not something that happened over night - always had and showed the ability) and vuna. Those 2 could have been more than handy.....

Talanoa is absolute rubbish with a brain like Suttons' (pea like and rarely used)
Champion, although he has some injuries is a player that looked like he was going to keep getting better.

                      Stupid $ouff$
