  • Outcast Braith shattered

    EXCLUSIVE

BRAITH ANASTA has spoken of his heartbreak at being squeezed out of Bondi Junction after Roosters officials all but conceded there was no place for him beyond 2011.

It is understood Anasta was secretly shopped to Parramatta just days ago on an immediate transfer after negotiations with the Roosters broke down this week.

''Ask me not long ago and I would have told you I couldn't see myself anywhere else, but to be honest with you they haven't offered me an extension of my contract,'' Anasta said.

''And I've been told I won't be offered an extension any time soon. I am off-contract and … it's tough, mate. Ideally, I'd like to sign my life away with the Roosters. I'm the captain of the club, it's my home and I love it. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed about it all because I am.''

An intermediary acting for Anasta approached Parramatta, who have more than $500,000 still available under the salary cap for this season. However, it's understood the Eels passed on the offer to the lock forward for either 2011 or 2012 and beyond.

The latest developments are a slap in the face for the Dally M captain of the year, who led the Roosters from the wooden spoon to an improbable grand final appearance last season. Anasta played some of his best football after shifting from five-eighth to lock and, at the age of just 29, is still a contender for representative honours.

''Now I guess I'm just going to have to reassess everything, my future,'' Anasta said. ''I'm not sure what's going to happen now. I suppose that will take care of itself in the next couple of months. It becomes difficult because if you wait, wait and wait until mid-year and then all of a sudden they don't offer you that extension or it's pretty poor compared to elsewhere, it leaves you with your hands tied.

''As hard as it is and as painful as it is and as disappointing as it is, you've really got to look after yourself. And playing the game for as long as I have - this is my 12th season - you see it happening to to other players and it's just part of the game. It's sad but it's just the way it is.''

Anasta's long-term future has been a source of constant speculation. North Queensland attempted to poach the premiership-winning playmaker during last year's finals. Roosters CEO Steve Noyce confirmed the club had refused to guarantee anything beyond this year.

''We talked about where the club is up to in terms of recruitment and retention and we agreed we'll wait until the start of the season before we look to do anything,'' Noyce said. ''As I understand, Smithy had a really good chat about his future plans for the club. There certainly was no discussion that he wouldn't be considered to be part of the plans, but in today's environment, the salary cap is only what it is. You have 25 players to fit in and you have to continually look to the future.

''It's an important decision for Braith as well, I understand and respect that. We're all aware of what a great ambassador for the game Braith is.

''He's right up there with the way he handles himself on and off the field and he's a great attribute for a club with young players.''

Anasta's preference is to finish his career with the Roosters and has even contemplated taking a pay cut to alleviate salary cap pressures. The former Kangaroo and State of Origin representative has previously shunned big-money offers to switch codes.

''At the end of the day you'll take pay cuts to stay where you want and be happy at a place where you want to be,'' Anasta said.

''It's just a matter of what extent.

''Players should be rewarded for staying loyal to the code.''

what. the. ****. Spewing. Who shops away their ****ing captain? This isn't what we need 2 months out from the season. Maybe the theory about Smith's teams turning to shit immediately after a successful year will turn out true.

Sign him on a 2 or 3 year contract for $200-250k and stop being disloyal ****s.

I feel awful for him. He really does love the club and to be basically told as the captain of the club (one who has a terrific season and played a pivotal role in energising, inspiring and leading this young group) that your not really welcome must be devastating.

I wouldn't have expected a long-term contract (for practicality's sake), but honestly I thought they could have extended it by a year with a pay cut. Would have kept him happy and wouldn't spoil the dynamic of the group, becasue really this sort of issue can disrupt the season.

Geez, I'm pretty sad about it too. I bloody hope they make some changes to the salary cap between now and the end of the year so that shit like this doesn't happen.

Edit: And oh, I'm also pretty ****ing angry at the club about this too, if that wasn't obvious.

          Anasta put up for sale

BRAITH Anasta's future at the Roosters is in doubt after he was told he is free to hit the open market.

Anasta was shopped to several clubs last week, including Parramatta and North Queensland, after he was refused a contract extension beyond 2011.
The Roosters have told Anasta, who led the team to last year's grand final, that he would have to take a significant pay-cut to stay at the club.

"We have just told Braith to be patient," a Roosters insider said last night.
"We want him at the club, but he may be able to get better money elsewhere and we wouldn't stand in his way. He knows as well as we do that it is a business, and that he has to do the best thing for himself.

"A football hasn't even been kicked this year so it is silly to be talking about his future. Braith is wanted at the club, but he will just have to be patient and wait and see how a couple of things play out."

With Todd Carney and Mitchell Pearce locked into long-term deals, the Roosters may be forced to cut their inspirational skipper at the end of the season.

Anasta was last week shopped to the Eels who showed little interest in the veteran back-rower.

The former Test five-eighth wants to finish his career with the Bondi-based club and is disappointed with the Roosters' reluctance to offer him a new deal.

And people expect players to be loyal? Why should they? Like someone else said, management did this to Fitzy. Sometimes we need old heads to keep the young ones in line. We can buy all the players we want but at the end of the day, all they want is the paycheque.

Big decision was always going to have to be made and it was always going to be a lose-lose situation; either Braith or a couple of our youngsters...

Management are on a hiding to nothing here this is a salary cap issue not a loyalty issue. Braith deserves a new contract but like he said that's just the way it is... In saying all that I hope the club can find a way to keep him his passion for the club is admirable and a rare commodity.

We're looking at another fitzy situation.

I think the stuff about shopping him around for 2011 is a load of crap. Pretty much all sides are set for this season and adding braith to a side is a BIG addition and will cause a fair bit of change.

As for beyond 2011, well he does have a whole year to earn an extention. So braith can do one of 2 things, 1) not bother, play out the year and find a new club or 2) play his ring out, have an absolute blinder and give the club no excuse not to give him a contract!

Thats the guts of the situation right there. Re-sign Braith and lose a couple of the next generation, or let him go and keep our core together. Lets not forget Carney comes off contract in the not too distant future. Who here would rather retain Anasta and lose Carney?

Good decision, even the timing of it for a number of reasons.

1 - Gets it out of the way. Make the announcement now and Braith can get his shit together over the course of the season and its not a distraction to him or the team.
2 - We have more than enough backrowers.
3 - We need the money to secure our young guns.
4 - Pearce is already being touted as NSW captain = our long term captain.

                    Chook.

He is very much a player of the last decade...
I think Australia and the Broncos have paid a big price for keeping Lockyer. Note we beat NZ with Carney playing an ordinary game... slot in Lockyer just because he has an awesome past and we get smashed. Injuries/Palestine Falau played a big part, but the Broncos failed to make the 8. QLD will get smashed this year, and possibly for the next 5 because they haven't really backed anybody to replace deepthroat. That and Glycemic Index (from NSW) and Palestine will not be there for separate reasons.

Sux how it's like this, but smart clubs don't wheel out past legends in wheelchairs just because they are "*insert name here*"
Anasta will go down in the books... nobody will forget how he kicked us to even the game against the Tigers... but in 3 years time guys like Mose, Leilua, Ford and Kennedy will have no history with the Roosters if we keep Anasta. That and we'll give him a farewell somewhat like Fitzy's.

Ideally this year Anasta will captain us to a premiership, then Pearce will do the same while Anasta is off making squillions in France or England.

as hard as it is, this was inevitable from the moment we signed carney. unfortunately braith is one of those players that isnt quite a half and isnt quite a backrower either and for the money he is on, its not financially worth our while. We have the best halves in the comp and with his salary freed up it can guarantee that we can keep our best young talent or even sign a couple of players as we see fit. Realistically for braiths salary we could have the best backrower in the comp so long-term, the club only stands to gain. hopefully its not a sour ending and doesnt affect the comraderie and morale around the place particularly as a lot of young talent come through, giving them the wrong impression/example could be a crucial error

I feared this might happen given the combination of Carney and the plethora of young backrowers the Roosters have on their books who will eventually press their claims for a permanent place in first grade or move on: Cherrington, Symonds, Tasi and Cordner. Then there's MAubs, Myles, Conn and JWH. The team is unbalanced and has been since Carney arrived. Braith regards himself as a 6 but made a fantastic go of being an 11 and 13 last year. The timing of all this isn't ideal and I wonder how it will affect Braith and the rest of the team this year if it isn't resolved soon.
