I am still confidant Braith will be a Rooster from 2012 and beyond, the best news is it is out in the open and all the bullshit lies and inuendos will stop, balls in Braiths court stay on reduced money or take the big dollars that will be on offer elsewhere, Braith cannot lose.
As much as i am a Braith fan, justifying paying him 400+ a season is impossible

Couldn't agree more. The thing about young players also is that you don't know how they are going to develop too. Some will be great, but believe me we'll get disappointed with the careers of the a few. Development isn't exponential and often doesn't continue at the same rate, instead it stagnates.

To give up all the passion, leadership, courage, effort and skill of Braith in order to gamble on some younger kids living up to their perceived potential sit doesn't seem right to me.

I understand the practicalities of the salary cap and realise that we'll be facing some big contract renewals in the future, but we also have players like Graham, Riddell, Ryles and Mini who are bound to leave soon. If Braith took a one year contract and a paycut I can't understand how we can't keep him for a year longer.

My thinking is that for 400k+ we can keep 5+ promising juniors. If just one of them comes good then it is totally worth is...

Anasta has maybe 5 years left of his career though... I reckon if he is willing to stay on a cut salary (say 200k?) then why not let him?

What are the thoughts on Anasta's market value? $250K a season? $300k a season?

No doubt he is currently on more than this. If the Roosters can pull together an offer just over $200k, then he may still be a good chance of staying.....

One thing I really hope does not happen is Anasta finding a new club and the Roosters release him from 2011 contract to let him start at his new club If Anasta does move on to another club, I would love to see him play out 2011 at the Roosters and (hopefully), add another premiership to his resume. It would certainly be an emotional GF if he did!

12 months ago people were saying get rid of him. Then he has a great second half to the year and everyone wants him signed for the next 3 years.
Who would you rather have for the next 3 years Kennedy or Anasta? You cant have both because of the salary cap. Myles, Pearce will both be great captains!!
There is little loyalty in any game, it's all a business!!!

I agree he can't stay on for more than 300k. The club should offer him something around the 200-250k mark. If he takes it, wonderful, if not, so be it. I won't be filthy on the club if they offer him something reasonable.

$200K is not much for a player of Braith's ability. Didn't the Sharks sign some school kid for that who'd never played NRL?

He says he loves the Roosters but he wouldn't sign for under 200k. Roosters first job should be to sign up the players that are a few years out from their prime. They probably don't have much more then 150k to offer Anasta!!

I agree with cutting some canoe and keeping him. But, as it stands we can't keep him under the current deal.

Our key match winners are Carney and Pearce. Anasta is now only a foil for these two.

I'm happy for him to stay but at a much reduced salary.

It is a tricky situation to be in. Will it affect our preparations? Time will tell.

                            The simple point is priorities.

We have two play makers who are the state of origin halves for the foreseeable future according to just about everyone. This means a significant investment in these two players.

You can't have a third player on marquee money and still keep a decent squad around them (unless you ignore the salary cap ala the storm).

As Pearceworstnightmare points out, either Anasta stays here for backrower money or he goes somewhere else for 5/8 money. He can't lose.

In relation to the calls of this being shoddily handled, we should also note that the Herald story points out that the Parra approach was made by a representative of Anasta, not the club. This is simply both parties playing out their respective sides of a negotiation.

If the Dragons can sign Gasnier for 55k a season, we can pay Anasta 200k a season...
I do kinda wish there was a "market value" thing set by the NRL though (just as a minimum wage thing, then you bid up from there.)

Say for example Gaz... played for Australia = +50k, played for NSW = +50k. Everything must come under the cap as a yearly base salary (no half yearly salaries... well you pay half but the cap includes what they'd be paid if they played a full year.)
Then a BIG catch... made what... 800k playing yawnion - THAT is his market value, he's gotta find an NRL club that will match something close to his last salary, otherwise the NRL can use its discretion, and simply block the deal based on the fact they are not paying true market value. That only applies if you have cashed in by switching codes...

My rant... but I feel some clubs screw the system by paying players too little. I'm all for 1 club players like Mini getting that towards the end of their careers (is footy the only profession where you get paid less towards the end of your career?) But not people who have constantly shopped around for the best deal, particularly those who have switched codes like Gaz then come back on rubbish salaries coz they are rich + don't need money but would love a premiership.

                                Braith's Saga

The facts are very simple, ever since Super League evolved, the game as we knew it, of club and player loyalty, went out the window, you can count on one hand the number of players that were able to finish their careers at the club they would of liked to have done it at. It is now a professional business, were, administrators, coaches, and players, are hired and fired on performances, nothing else matters.

In the ideal world, Braith could of been offered an extention to his contract, but the two main positions he covers, of 5/8, and lock, are well and truely covered by younger players coming thru at the club, and taking alot less of a chunk out of the salary cap. In my opinion, except for the last half of last season, we have paid overs, for what we have received from him, during his period with us, for the money we paid him. In saying that, he has been a terrific ambassador for the club, without a hint of scandal, and I do believe he actually does love the club.

I am hoping the money saved on Braith will be earmarked for Luke Towers, to take over from Mini, next season, allowing both Mini and Braith to have a last couple of seasons of touch footy over in the UK, on good money, to feather their retirement nest egg.

                                Regards to all
