  • Carney gets the boot, for now.

ROOSTERS star Todd Carney is set to be relieved of the goal-kicking duties at Bondi Junction as he continues his rehabilitation from groin surgery.

The Dally M medallist could miss up to a month of the 2011 season and with kicking duties an obvious strain on the groin area, it is understood coach Brian Smith is looking at other options, at least until Carney is back to 100 per cent fitness.

Halfback Mitchell Pearce has been spotted doing kicking drills with renowned conversion specialist and former Souths coach Jason Taylor, while skipper Braith Anasta and outside back BJ Leilua are also options.

Another possibility is returning hooker Mark Riddell, who could bring his famous salute back to the NRL.

Carney will travel to Ipswich with the Roosters on Wednesday for their weekend trial against Queensland Cup side the Jets, where he is expected to meet the same specialist who helped Brisbane Lions AFL star Michael Voss return in just four weeks from a similar injury.

The original prognosis when Carney went under the knife last week was that he would be sidelined for up to 10 weeks, but Roosters staff are quietly confident he could return in as little as six and be fit for the club's annual round one encounter against South Sydney.

Riddell is the most accomplished kicker but won't be on the field enough. That leaves Braith and SKD as those with some kicking experience. As for Pearce, interesting news that he might be another option.

Carney doesn't need to rush this injury so I hope they learn from the experiences of Fittler and Braith about how to handle problematic groin injuries.

Pearce is good at kicking, and I guess looking to expand his resume...
Drop goals I know, but under pressure both Carney and Pearce were HOPELESS during the finals. Granted everybody marked up expecting them to kick... but it took Braith's experienced boot to kick us to glory.

Be interesting to see Pearce kicking. Anybody seen his action at training? I'd go down but I'm stuck living near Manuka oval for the next year at least (work... somebody please find me a good job in Bondi so I can go home!)

Pearce was a goal kicker until he made first grade. Pretty good from memory.
