This time next year we will be talking about new players I'm sure. If we need to keep Ryles then our recruitment staff haven't done their job in my opinion.
Ryles is solid but one of our biggest weaknesses is go forward. He isn't going to improve the situation.
Ryles was the only one bending the line last season ( as well as Kennedy and Mose - who imo can't play big minutes).
Myles, Conn, FPN regularly got dominated in attack. If go forward was the issue, then they are the weakness(note: they are all backrowers in my book).
Although FPN improved out of sight, he still has games where he will take 6 or 8 hit-up for 50 metres.
I'm hopeful Kennedy will start alongside Ryles, and FPN will improve his attacking workrate otherwise the backrow of Anasta/Maubs/FPN is our biggest weakness. If Anasta is a ballplayer on the left fringe and Maubs runs very wide on the right fringe (neither roll up their sleeves in working up the field) then FPN has no choice but to put the hard yards down the middle. If not, i hope Conn gets rewarded for his form and is allowed to play his natural position of backrow - where i thing he will flourish.
Just my thoughts.

Coach Smith eluded to our inferior go-forward play, that's one reason for Piggy's signing.
IMO, our pack needs a Fitzy type worker/all-rounder. Barring injuries, i'm expecting the injection of a young Cordner or Ethan Lowe to provide it.
A fit Anthony Watts will do wonders as well.

What i find with FPN is that he gets dominated in the first 15-20 minutes of a game when he starts as a prop/tight forward. To start the game he would be better suited to running a bit wider out, on the fringes, looking to target and barnstorm his way through the smaller guys. Then after he has had a spell, when he comes back on for his second stint he can afford to play in tight and be quite affective making good yards up the middle. This is how i hope Brian uses him for this year.

He's still a little lost for me, has the ability to play a number of roles for us just hasn't really settled into the starting team yet. Smith may just see him as a versatile player but I reckon he's got a little more quality than that and it's about time he made a position his own. Be it lock, second row or up front.

I'd keep Ryles for another season whether or not we signed another high profile front rower. We have potentially, a few candidates for a starting position, but they're all very young. Our forward pack lacked some power against some of the opposition packs last year, I was disappointed we did'nt improve our strength in this department for 2011.

He's a good four to five years away from his prime.
He will only get better.
This is great news....
