  • Waerea-Hargreaves won't hide from Dwyer

    http://www.nrl.com/waerea-hargreaves...4/default.aspx

Sydney Roosters prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves denies he's out to avenge Simon Dwyer's monster hit when he faces the Wests Tigers backrower in Saturday's NRL trial match.

The giant Kiwi was left seeing stars after Dwyer sent him crashing to the turf during an epic 100-minute finals clash last year, won by the Roosters 19-15.

Waerea-Hargreaves was forced to undergo scans to determine if he was fit enough to take part in the rest of the finals series, having been forced off the field late in the game.

However, the affable 22-year-old said he won't be singling out Dwyer for special attention, but certainly won't be taking a backward step from him either.

"I am just going to go out and do what is best for the team, the game is different now to last year, although it seems when we play the Tigers the games get bigger," Waerea-Hargreaves told AAP.

"It would be selfish of me to go out and do individual stuff, but if he (Dwyer) comes towards me then we will see what happens."

Rated as one of the best young forwards in the world, Waerea-Hargreaves missed the opening five rounds of last season after injuring his shoulder in training.

Twelve months on, and with a full pre-season behind him, the New Zealand international warned his rivals he will be even better in 2011.

"This time last year I had my arm in a sling and missed the first five or six rounds so it's just good to be ready for round one," he said.

"I didn't have any pre-season last year but this year I have, and I feel a lot fitter and a lot stronger as a result, I am also more experienced."

Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce will play his first game on Saturday since the grand final defeat to St George Illawarra in October.

The NSW playmaker will be partnered in the halves by 21-year-old Mark Kheirallah with five-eighth Todd Carney still recovering from a groin operation.

Pearce said he was unsure if the Dally M Medallist would be fit for the season opener against bitter rivals South Sydney on March 11, but backed Kheirallah to be an able deputy.

"He played fullback in the `20s last year, I thought he played really well in the trial against the Bulldogs the other week," Pearce said.

"He is probably not an organising type, but very good with the ball and really fast, a bit like the guy who he is replacing.

"I think he will play really well, he has been really confident in training and if Toddy isn't right for round one, then there may be a spot for him."

If JWH's chin came in contact with any other player's shoulder it would have had the same result. Yet it will join the Sattler's tackle on superslug Byrne as one of the most hyped up tackles of all time.

You'll see both tackles still replayed in 50 years time and think Sattler was a man mountain who could run 100m in 5 seconds, and Dwyer was some superman made out of steel.

Very true and very succinctly put, agree with every word.

Shayne Hayne will always have my respect for making that call to allow the win against the feed in the ensuing scrum, it was clear he too thought the video ref was too biased/gutless to put the head high tackle on report with the penalty in front to us.

Hayne made a mistake, just like the video ref

on another note, take a look at how far offside Heighington was at marker at the play the ball prior to Anasta's field goal

I've noticed that previously as well. One of these days there will be a ref ballsy enough to penalise a team for that, just hope its not against us!

Take a look (or 100.) The second one has a closer shot of what happens.

In my view the scrum was legit... it touched the halfback but he failed to pick it up properly. Seeing the pill on the ground, FPN dived on it and it looked like a win against the feed.

The Tigers simply weren't expecting it... Lote was off flexing his guns and throwing his shirt off into the crowd, which left Anasta with a good 5-10 seconds to line up his kick. Awesome kick and awesome instincts from FPN... I don't think FPN gets enough credit. The ball was already out of the scrum and their halfback was too slow...

                  ---

PS- Braith packs the scrum in the 2nd row... why didn't anybody notice? I feel so dumb now...

In any other game a shoulder to the head would,ve been a penalty and on report, we would have won the game then. The end result was the right one!!!!!!!

                          Vasco,

                          On the contrary.
Last night, not only was JWH copping it hard from the Tigers forwards on the field but also from the WTigers players enclosure.
Todd Payten was screaming, "kill him", "knock his head off" each time JWH carted the ball up. A bit like waiving a red flag at a raging bull.

JWH must go up another notch this year and be more effective.

                            I agree.

I like the kid he has potential but he needs to do a bit less talking and stop trying to be the tough guy all the time.

I know he had a tough pre season last year but I thought he was one of our least effective forwards.

Agreed...i think we need all our forwards to step up like Martin K has...let their footy do all the talking
