I wouldn't risk such a large portion of a salary cap on a player that is not a part of the spine, or brings off-field contributions to benefit the team (similar to Petero).
The only centre in the game at this moment who could come anywhere near that figure would be Jamie Lyon. Inglis would be a distant second.
SKD is playing great football ... outside arguably the best halves combination in the NRL. How many tries/LB/TA would Lyon, Inglis, Lawrence or even Tonga snag playing on that fringe outside Pearce/Carney ?
Someone mentioned it earlier - if you're going to pay SKD 300+, what are you going to pay Pearce or Carney ? They are by far more important to the team than SKD. Have to balance the squad somehow.
Maybe, in a few years SKD can prove that he is worth that much with consistant performances, but in my eyes you cannot justify paying anywhere near 300+ for him at this particular point in time.
The only one I agree with sort of is Lyon who had some inexperienced yet talented halves alongside him but he is a vastly more experienced player.. SKD will get offers of > $400K a year from several clubs.. If we offer less than $300K then his improvement will be seen somewhere else, not at the Roosters.Last edited by Cockadoodledoo; 03-08-2011, 12:20 AM....

as most know i have been a champion of SKD since day dot at the club but this predicament has me a little caught in two minds. As much as i want him to stay, what cost could this have on the retention of other players in the side?
To my mind we have 3 capable deputies to SKD to fill the 2 centre voids in J-Carney, Linnett and Leilua in particular. With the likes of Blair and Moga coming through in particular i just fear that we may be stretching our resources a little thin if we re-sign him for someone around 300+k when we already have the likes of myles, pearce, carney already on those kinds of salaries long term and with the sort of talent we have like friend, kennedy, leilua, cherrington, cordner etc, a lot of these guys will demand decent pay packets down the track as well and dont forget that the vetrans bonus is helping us squeeze mini in for a lot less that what his evetual replacement will demand so are we tieing up too much big money in a few players? This would be my only concern but with o'sullivan in particular on board and politis' experience and negotiating ability on these matters I will trust their judgement on how to manage a young and emerging side like ours where contracts are only going to increase going forward with few players vacating the roster to accomodate such pay rises.

SKD is one of those telented youngsters who IS reaching his potential. Sign him up and lets have a permiership this year or next!

All the centres you mentioned would command more than $300K with the exception of Tonga and I would reckon he would be on close to that at the Cowboys. Your other comments are laughable.. Tonga played outside a guy named Jonathon Thurston, you may have heard of him, he doesn't go too badly... Lawrence alongside Benji Marshall, plays alright too.. Inglis alongside Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk, Billy Slater.. not bad players that mob...

Without looking back i am almost sure i said halves COMBINATION when crediting SKD's success last season.
I've heard of Thurston, but i am not sure that you have ever heard of his halves partner - a mr. Grant Rovelli - arguably the worst 6 in the comp last year.
Benji Marshall rings a bell, but that 30 year old man, pretending to be 20, who partners him in the halves is far from a world beater. Robert Lui is his name, incase you have never heard of him ( not that i blame you, not exactly a player that is remembered).
Todd Carney's form last year eclipsed both Thurston and Marshall. To add to that, Pearce had his best season to date and ranked in the top 3 in most attacking stats.
If SKD is getting offers of 400k plus from other clubs then so be it. I hope we don't fall into the trap of a bidding war. Lets not make out as if he is a sure thing based on his breakout season. 350+k a season is a big gamble on a centre with one great season behind him.
One day he might be worth marquee money, not now.
