  • Questions that need to be answered before round 1

its hard not to focus on the circus surrounding Carney at the moment, but I thought I would throw out a few thoughts about some other issues that Smith will need to address before the season kicks off.

    - Team balance
if as expected Myles gets suspended for the first couple of rounds who should makeup the backrow, we were already unbalanced having Maubs/Anasta as second rowers as their workrate/size is not what is required in the modern game, the loss of Myles will only make the problem worse.

    - Has BJ won the vacant wing spot
has been a heavily debated topic on this forum, judging by the pre-season it looks like Smith has decided on a back 5 of Mini,Perrett,SKD,Linnett,BJ. I don't mind BJ on the wind when we are at full strength he has the ability to break tackles and create second phase play on kick returns which will help alleviate some problems we have had with our go forward.

    - Changes in rule intrepretations by Harrigan
this is a serious problem for our team, recently we have been the most penalised team and its only likely to get worse with Harrigan running the show, also our dummy half running is likely to be somewhat negated by a slower play the ball putting more pressure on our forward pack to lay the platform.

    - Conn's injury status
not entirely sure of the injury to Conn but judging by the performance against the Tigers we could certainly use his tough defence and second phase play, when fit needs to be part of the top 17.

    - The Carney Situation
whether we like it or not we are likely to be without his services for the first part of the season, what is not clear is how Smith will deal with his absence, he has shown a reluctance in the pre-season to let Anasta anywhere near number 6, but surely the team will have a better balance with Anasta at 6 and a more sturdy backrow of either Maubs,FPN,Conn or FPN,JWH,Maubs

    - Piggy Riddell
has Riddell down enough to earn a spot on the bench, we went into the biggest game of the year without a bench hooker, I doubt Smith has any plans to dump Riddell but hopefully his form picks up to warrant a spot in the top 17.

    - the SKD/Anasta contract situationalthough it shouldn't effect either players on field performance for the good of team harmony their contracts should be settled either way before round 1 kicks off.

would be interested to hear others thoughts heading into the season opener.

have a bad feeling about 2011

the performance on Sat night was terrible

without Carney, our attack looks as impotent as when Anasta was running it

Pearce needs to stand up big time

and Rd 1 spots must be found for J Carney and Masoe

          Team balance
Has been off ever since Carney arrived and made Braith a second rower. This problem will only resolve itself once Braith is no longer in the Top 17. The Roosters may struggle once again this year with the lack of workrate that Braith and MAubs are capable of producing. As for Nate, I don't think he has a case to answer over that tackle but then I didn't have a great view of it so I could be wrong.

          Leilua on the wing
Don't like it at all but will have to defer to the coaching staff.

          Rule changes
They're the same for everyone so I trust that the coaching staff will have the Roosteers well adapted by the time the season gets going. Why would douchebag hollywood single out the Roosters?

          Carney being out
I really don't want to consider that but it appears as though they best prepare for the eventuality.

I am still hopeful Carney will be there for round 1.

Only saw Myles' tackle live so can't comment on how "bad" it was. If he is out then it's Maubs to lock with Anasta and FPN in the back row.

Bench will be JWH, Conn, Riddell (who could be handy) and Tom Symonds.

I wouldn't worry too much about the SKD contract situation. It won't be long before they announce he has re-signed.

                Mini
                Perret
                SKD
                Matika
                Justin Carney
BJ - yes the brains surprise choice for 5/8th has all the skills to fill in for Carney who I suspect may not be there other wise if he is then BJ in for Matika who I rate highly and deserves his spot with good performances in the trials.
                Pearce
                Anasta
                Conn
Masoe thats if Myles is out otherwise Moose to the bench)
                Kennedy
                Friend
                Ryles

                Bench - Piggy ,
Maubs , Frank paul and Tom Symonds

a little trial form should reward a few blokes while two are in my team based on last year.
JWH and few others have showed little form in the trials.

My sneaky suspicion is that I think that Smith may want to play Justin in the centers.

                  My ramblings...

                  Team balance
Non-existent as usual, but that will always be the case unless you cheat. You'll never have Todd Carney as 5/8 and Benji Marshall to back him up on the bench.

IMO our balance is basically damn good halves, solid forwards and a bloody good centre who has a knack for scoring tries (did even when we were wooden spooners, although less consistently.)

We have play makers all over the field, but a lot of serious holes. Last season our strengths outweighed our weaknesses... but we still lost to the Sharks twice and struggled to make the top 8. Given we made the GF, people will have done their homework on us, so I'm nervous...

Has BJ won the vacant wing spot
He's a bit like Barry O'farrell... there's no real competition between him and the job. I thought he had a blinder against the tigers (aside from his double, which made the statistics nerds happy.)

My problem with him is he's a bit slow, and not that good at game-saving, scrambling defence. He's a big islander who belongs in the back row IMO.

Reading BJ's Roosters profile, his #1 footy hero is Phil Graham. He comes across as a piss taker and always has a cheeky face. You couldn't not put BJ in your team for that cheeky x-factor...

Changes in rule interpretations by Harrigan
The refs will always fark us over... that's just the way it is. That said, you won't beat the system by fighting against it. Smith needs to study the new interpretations and capitalise on them by adapting our game. Sux that teams like the Dragons don't have to do this and will be breaking the rules all season... but that just makes our victories over them even sweeter, knowing the ref was on their side and they still lost.

                  Conn's injury status
                  Didn't know he was injured?

                  The Carney Situation
The NRL/courts will decide on that one. Yeah... big trouble and I don't know who's going to cover for him. Probably not Khierallah... :P

                  Piggy Riddell
Is experienced and knows Smith well, but he's a puzzling signing. Friend, Watts, Riddell... and Friend isn't even injured! (Is he even injury prone?) As soon as we sack them all Friend will get injured, so I'll shut up.

Who knows? Friend at halfback, Pearce at 5/8, Piggy the hooker. Friend could be the next Craig Wing... that said, Pearce plays origin, so I doubt he'll be shunted out of position unless there's a really good reason.

                  The SKD/Anasta contract situation
Anasta's a great mentor and is willing to take a bullet for the boys... just sign him. That said, he's experienced and I don't think the situation will hurt him. He's a master of creating intrinsic energy/hiding any of his issues. Best example was when some carnt randomly king hit him... he walked out of the pub and went home (although no doubt he could have decked the carnt.)

SKD... I think will simply re-sign. That said, if we get complacent and perform badly... why should he stay? We need to be serious about SKD. He's one of our growing products and we don't want to lose him just as he's coming good.

BJ will be on the wing

Carney will play against Souffs - they even thought about giving him 20 mins against Tigers.

I was disappointed with Riddell in the trial - he was very sluggish out of dummy half.

We will get caned by the refs.

                    Braith will get another year.

SKD will get three or four.
