Sydney Roosters star Todd Carney is out of Friday's NRL season opener against South Sydney at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Carney, who has endured a torrid lead-up to the start of the new campaign, following his arrest for drink-driving 10 days ago, has not been named in the Roosters side after failing to recover from January groin surgery.

The Dally M Medallist sustained the injury playing for Australia in the Four Nations clash with New Zealand in Auckland in October.

Coach Brian Smith named Braith Anasta at five-eighth alongside Mitchell Pearce with Carney expected to be back for the round two clash with Manly.

However, the Roosters are boosted by the surprise return of secondrower Mitch Aubusson who had been expected to be sidelined until round four with a shoulder injury.

Souths coach John Lang said he had been preparing for Carney to play and believed the troubled playmaker's off-field problems would have no effect on his game.

"He had a great season last year and I see no reason why he won't pick up where he left off last year," Lang said.

"Often for players, the game and training, if there's been a few problems that can be a bit of a relief for them rather than another pressure."

Manly fullback Brett Stewart will play for the first time since round one of last season.

Stewart had 20 minutes in the Sea Eagles' last trial match against the Warriors in Auckland a fortnight ago, in what was his first taste of action since round one against the Wests Tigers last year, where he sustained a season-ending knee injury.

However, David Williams, who also missed all of 2010 due to shoulder surgery is likely to miss out due to a hamstring strain when the team is named on Tuesday.

New Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin will include two debutants in his backline against North Queensland on Friday with centre Justin Hodges struggling with a hamstring problem.

Jack Reed, 20, is set replace Hodges, who sat out last season with an Achilles injury, with exciting winger Dane Gagai, also 20, likely to start against the Cowboys.

Canberra coach David Furner may be forced to turn to a rookie halfback for the Raiders' NRL season opener against Cronulla on Sunday.

The Green Machine's big off-season signing Matt Orford is almost certain to miss the Canberra Stadium clash as he battles a groin problem.

The 2009 Dally M Medallist is yet to take the field for the Raiders and Furner is set to name either Ben Picker or Sam Williams, who are both 19, in the No.7 shirt.

Another Canberra recruit, Blake Ferguson, will make his debut against his former club having recovered from a broken finger

lol. Since when were Brian Smith teams announced publicly early in the week? Fortunately keeping two team lists isn't a rort or we'd be in a Storm of trouble. I know it annoys some people, but personally I like the smoke and mirrors. Keeps things interesting during the week. My hunch is TC will play. Wild card would be Kheirallah: I don't think he did enough in the trial, but if Smith was going to play him, I'm sure he'd try to keep it away from the media.

yep, there's no way Braith is playing at 6.

It stuffs up my fantasy team because I have a few chookies in it.

I hope Todd plays because if he does it means he will be 100%. They won't play him at 99%. Happy for Anasta to stay at 5/8. Kheirallah didn't look up to NRL standard for a 5/8 against the Tigers and they had Mini injecting himself in too many times. We looked to have no idea in attack. Kheirallah is also a HUGE liability in defense.

                This.

I would have just played Ford or Symonds at five-eighth, rather than shifting Anasta and Nuuausala from backrow and bench, where both are suited best to respectively IMO.

IF Bwaif plays 5/8, then we've lost 2 attacking option (Carney and Bwaif on the LHS), and why would you breakup an existing excellent combo, (Bwaif down that left channel)
So if Carney doesn't play, Big Tom should play 5/8. Keep it simple by either running off Pearce or shifting it along the line.

I agree they won't play him if they think there's any major risk. There's no way he'll be 100% match fit though. And while I'm no medico, I assume from the fact that there's been talk of TC playing but not goalkicking for a while that there must be a level of medical assessment which says it's OK for him to play but the repair after surgery will take a while for a return to 100% strength.

Can anyone tell me if there was a period early in the second half of the trial against the Tigers that Kheirallah was off the field? If he was there, he was so inconspicuous I couldn't even spot him. If he was given a rest, I'm wondering who was at 6? Braith still seemed to be stationed wide on the left. And the couple of scrums we had in that period gave nothing away, because we tried a couple of set pieces with, from memory, SKD and Perrett at first receiver.

So you would rather bring in a kid who has played no first grade at 5/8 rather than a guy who has played origin and won a comp at 5/8 and has played that position season upon season.

                            No chance...not against Souths anyway.

Braith is the 3rd best half in the club..possiby 2nd best. (look at when he and carney were the halves last year ina few games...Brissie was one of them)

We have numerous backrowers that can do a job...not numerous halves!

Okay, did anyone catch the channel 9 interview of Braith this evening? They asked if TC was playing and he replied he would have said 100% last week, but since then he's been a bit behind the eight-ball so he didn't know if Todd would be in. I also recall reading in an article that Todd would have until today to prove himself ready.

Putting two and two together here, I think he probably failed the fitness test and he will be out this week. I think the DUI charges have put his rehabilitation a little back so I'm really disappointed. I really hope it is Brian Smith's mind games at work, but it looks in all cases otherwise.

I'm really nervous about RD1 now. Players out of position, no Carney, poor pre-season form, recent dramas...it doesn't encourage the prospect of a win does it?
