The forwards have to play real good for Pearce to fire especially if they get the tackle count up.

THE player's coach is adamant he will not play. The opposing coach is not so convinced. But the training session Todd Carney completed yesterday, on his own but watched carefully by coach Brian Smith, will do nothing to dispel speculation the Dally M medal winner might be given an 11th-hour call-up for tonight's round-one clash against South Sydney.

Carney was ruled out of the match on Monday due to a groin injury, and by all accounts was considered no chance. But since then he has been running freely, and after training with his teammates at Moore Park yesterday morning, he was put through his paces again afterwards, with Smith watching on as he ran, stepped and kicked.

Carney, who was said to be shattered to be ruled out, spoke with Smith after the session, and looked happy with what he heard. But if Carney was being given some good news about his fitness for tonight's clash, Smith was telling the Herald a different story.

        ''Zero chance,'' he said. ''Nil.

Nothing. No chance at all. It's just because some people saw him training [on Wednesday] with our game squad. But he's still in the rehab squad. He's pretty close to a certainty for the week after. I'm not going to take the risk this week.''

South Sydney coach John Lang, who watched helplessly in the corresponding game last year as Carney, in his Roosters debut, destroyed his side, could not rule out the possibility of the five-eighth, who was replaced in the squad by Braith Anasta, playing.

''We'll see what happens,'' Lang said. ''I wouldn't be putting my house on it either way.

''Sometimes, people do make late changes. I'll wait until an hour before kick-off before I find out, and we'll make adjustments then.''

Whether he does or doesn't play, Lang wasn't entirely bothered. ''I don't think their game's going to change dramatically, whether he's there or not,'' the coach said.

Hopeless... and the SMH is the "good" paper compared to the rest out there!! Where can you go for quality journalism these days rather than sensationalist cr@p that isn't backed up by any solid evidence?

                Fantasy land maybe.
                Quality journalism does not exist.
In a lot of ways its an extremely dishonourable profession loaded with responsibilities that are simply flushed down the toilet.

It is one of the few areas of employment (could not use the word profession) that I would be extremely disappointed if one of my kids decided to enter.

"1216: NEWS - Carney will play, MG says

Former rugby league hard man Mark Geyer wrote on his Twitter feed that he expected Todd Carney to take the field against Souths on Friday night.

Roosters coach Brian Smith is adamant Carney won't play, but MG isn't convinced."

not too sure about the reliability of the source (MG), but there are just so many rumors going around about him being a late inclusion, can they all be wrong?

Rain = heavy pitch = more likely to do damage to a groin injury

                      They probably won't risk him

I don't think any have inside information... it's just the guru game... one of those issues where you can say "I reckon Carney will probably play." If he does then you're a guru and gain respect with the media... if he doesn't, you can forget the bet was ever on.

                        A common media tactic.

It's just 1 game anyway. A game I think we should have no trouble winning without Carney...
