  • The Bomb And Stupid Penalties

These are the two biggest things I found most frusterating about our game yesterday...

Cant we come up with a more creative 5th tackle option apart from the bomb? Ok Barba is a rookie fullback but after the 10th bomb I think we should have tried something different. Especially considering we have the NSW halves in Pearce and Carney and Anasta floating around...

Fed up with stupid penalties given throughout the match. HasntBrian Smith got into JWH yet? We have put up with it for over a season now!

Oh Carney....there is no way he is fit, and he obviously came back too early....all he does is runs across the field....he wont be NSW water boy if he doesnt get right, and I would rather he get right for us, not the SOO......

As for JWH's penalties.....no idea what gets into his head, but he isnt alone out there....how the hell MAbus wasnt binned was a bloody miracle....

Back to basics should be the lesson for this week.....anyone who thinks they are too good for the bosics, should be either stating on the bench, or perhaps saying g'day to the Newtown boys......

I agree. Especially on your point about penalties. Penalties are becoming a characteristic of our game. Forget the supposed bias and 50/50 calls - most of these penalties are unnecessary and our own stupid fault. We keep doing that we will get the spoon. You just can't give away that many penalties in a competition as close as this one. Hell, the Sharkies beat the premiers.

I don't think it's only our halves who are bomb happy. I think that goes for the majority of halves in the game today. Alfie's kicking game was one of the two best I've seen. Plenty of variety and his grubber was a weapon in itself. The number of repeat sets he got from his variety and that grubber was mind boggling. Langer was a smart and patient footballer. One of the characteristics of the Broncos during those golden years was how they could be down by 12 with 10-15 to go and still win. I think apart from the individual brilliance of the likes of Renouf and Carne, a lot of those comebacks came from Langer just being patient. The really strange thing I find is that our wingers aren't noted for their aerial abilities, and are built quite low to the ground, so grubbers, chips and low driven kicks would be far more suited to our games.

What kind of play would you prefer on the 5th tackle when you're 40 out?

It's either the low kick for the ingoal ( very hard to execute ) or the bomb, which coupled with a good chase has a chance of being dropped. Worst case scenario, they start their set on the 5 or 10 instead of getting a tap on the 20.

Our goal line bombs were executed fairly poorly yesterday and i agree that they need to thread in a grubber at times to change it up.

SKD showed the grubber's a dangerous weapon yesterday with that kick that went off Bryson Goodwin's legs and his quick thinking to score off it.

That unpredictable stuff is what scores points, not a bomb and hope.

They were trying to bomb Barba yesterday because he's a rookie and it didn't come off.

The worst part about trying to bomb a rookie is that they know what to expect each kick. If you mix it up a bit and make his life a nightmare...

Our worst three culprits last year for conceding penalties were FPN, Maubs and JWH. I know everybody loves to blame Ryles which I think is unfair. Maubs was an idiot for trying to drag down the dog when the ball was clearly going out in goal. At worst it was a penalty try and time in the bin anyway. And why do players jump up for a bomb well before the ball comes down or even close when you know it is going to be a penalty. Dumb play. Maubs has had a shocker so far this year and I would gladly swap him for Symonds at this stage. The two dumbest penalties were FPN crossing the halfway line off a kick off leading to back to back tries and JWH holding down a player 90 seconds before the break leadnig to a try and giving them a half time lead.

We concede far too many penalties that lead to tries in the following set. It cost us the game yesterday. It repeatedly happened last year too. Are some players that thick?

Tell us Red Rooster what do you suggest we do on the 5th tackle ? Run it ? Short grubber kick or chip and chase ? Bomb which if put up well is a 50/50 contest. Tell us all what you think we should be doing on the last

several bombs to force the fullback deeper and then a grubber/chip kick can work a gem if executed properly.. of course it's very difficult and Carney whilst an exponent of this isn't fully fit

It looks to me like the Roosters have gone backwards in the off-season and seemingly haven't learned a thing from last year. Stupid penalties and predictable 5th tackle options are testament to both.

Bombing is ok, but like any attacking play when you do it over and over again it becomes less effective especially when your not having much success with it...

Run it on the last every now and again, mix it up etc... If you look at the game again you would see their left side with Lafai was their for the picking many times in the second half on the 5th, Turner always dropped back early!

Look at Thurston / Johns and what every other great halfback does on the 5th never the same old repetitive BS, pretty disappointing consiering we have an origin halfback and two 5/8's on the field and all they can muster are bombs...

I raised this question in the Roosters forum many a years ago which was preferred by the fans and many preferred the bomb. I always prefer the grubber because the bomb is 50/50 because it sits there allowing the defense to set where as the grubber favors the attacking team because the ball mainly runs away from the defense.

Nah, doesn't look like we've learnt from our mistakes of last season though unfortunately - just gotta hope we squeeze somewhere into the bottom of the 8 and can make a run during the finals.
