Wests Tigers captain Robbie Farah considering groin surgery that would keep him out six weeks

Wests Tigers' injury crisis threatens to claim another high-profile victim after it emerged captain Robbie Farah had taken advice from a leading surgeon on whether to undergo groin surgery that would rule him out of contention for the opening State of Origin game.

Farah, who has barely trained with his teammates in recent weeks, is struggling with osteitis pubis, although he insists he will play against Sydney Roosters at Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday and continue playing unless the pain becomes too great.

Even if he does play, it is understood the Tigers will make a decision after round four as to whether Farah undergoes surgery that would rule him out for up to six weeks.

The Weekend Australian reports Farah met surgeon Neil Halpin during the week to discuss the injury, but was intent on playing against the Roosters given the injury crisis that has engulfed the club.

Heading into the Roosters game, the Tigers have more than 10 of their top 33 players sidelined.

Among the injured are Lote Tuqiri (broken arm), Chris Lawrence (dislocated hip), Liam Fulton (shoulder), Beau Ryan (groin), Robert Lui (ankle), Gareth Ellis (ankle) and Bryce Gibbs (knee). The last thing they can afford is to lose their captain and some would argue most important player.

While five-eighth Benji Marshall is credited with sparking the Tigers' attack, Farah is the glue that holds the side together. Behind Melbourne Storm, Queensland and Australia captain Cameron Smith, he ranks as arguably the next best hooker in the game.

Although Michael Ennis was preferred for all three games by Blues selectors in 2010, Farah was the back-up hooker to Smith for the Four Nations tour at the end of the year. Surgery would definitely rule him out of Origin I and leave him fighting an uphill battle to force his way into coach Ricky Stuart's thoughts after that.
