PROVEN track record for winning premierships.
As stated, he has taken some very average teams to the GF only to be beaten by teams of superstars. I would rather Smith than some that have won a premiership. Stewart, Hagan, Lang.

Again, he got a team that finished wooden spoon to a GF. Our players improved under him. Some of the no-names at Newcastle have become great players. We have plenty of up & comers that have re-signed. We don't need any more up & comers.

Who do we need to come to our club? Noyce has said that we won't be buying any big name players like the past and stick to development. We have a great amount of quality depth now and most of them are up and comers. More than we have for a very long time.

First of all,the team that won the wooden spoon is not the exact same team that went to the GF.
Yes,he took our team to one half of the GF.After half time,Bennett had his team come out with a plan to turn it around,Smith had the roosters come out bored to death.
The teams Smith has coached have FAILED to make the finals more times than they have made the GF. (FACT)
St George is the ONLY club he left that went on to win a GF & that would not have happened if Benett wasn’t there.When St George won,how many of the players or management credited Smith for laying the ground work for their victory? None!
Smith isn’t loathed at Newcastle?
Roosters haven’t had troubles recruiting players from clubs once trained by Smith?
You don’t even acknowledge Smiths appalling decisions regarding Friend & Aubusson.

Apart from his years as a rookie coach with a hack Steelers team (that had just entered the comp) Smith's achievements and consistency are remarkable, especially when you consider the situations of the clubs he has gone to.
The Dragons had not made even the semi-finals for six years, yet he took them to consecutive grand finals. On the first occasion no one had expected them to finish better than mid-table; and the Broncos teams they lost to were practically SOO strength line-ups.
The Eels were in dire straits when Smith went there in 1997. They hadn't made the finals for 12 years. The previous 2 years they finished 19th (second last) and 13th. He took them straight to 3rd (on differential; equal second on points). They missed only 2 final series in the next decade with Smithy as their coach, made the 2001 grand final (as well as smashing the point scoring record for any club in history) and won 2 minor premierships.
The Knights team Smith inherited were OK with Andrew Johns and diabolical without him. The last time their halfback was injured they had lost a record 13 consecutive games. Johns lasted one game and 8 minutes of Smith's tenure, yet the coach made the Knights extremely competitive. They were heading for the top 4 in 2009 before we nabbed Smithy. He obviously lost the dressing room after that decision, and three heavy defeats before he was pushed waylaid their season.
But the Knight's loss was our gain. To appreciate the enormity of taking a wooden spooner to a grand final you have to consider that it is pretty much unprecedented. The only time it happened previously in rugby leage was in the 1930s with a Wests team that was actually the dominant team of the era. (They had only been wooden spooners the year before due to most of their team shipping off on a Kangaroo tour, and there were only 8 teams in the comp.) Thus far I have not seen any similar example unearthed in any major sport in the world--certainly not of a coach taking a pitiful 16th placed, genuine wooden spoon team to a grand final. Smithy has received plaudits for it of course, but not to the degree that such a unique achievement deserves.Comment
