  • The Culture Change

It all happened after 2005... Some very poor recruiting decisions with ill disciplined players (even some that are not here) have ensured a stain remains in our culture...

There is no denying that we have been the most poorly behaved disciplined team over the past 4-5 years... Direct result of the boofheads we have allowed to infiltrate the RWB

Poor dicipline has been rife throughout this joint and is evident everywhere even amongst our "Best Players"...

Ironically things started to go down hill after our focus to sign Bulldogs players that had just won the comp, and had accomplished what most players would want in their career

The pissup culture has been carried through this club over the past 5 years by some prominent players, some have misbehaved some havent, NONE have ever been sacked for good to send a message to the team...
    Carney
    Mason
    Myles
    Friend
    Watts
    Sa
    Pearce
    Mini

All supposedly our better players, all have had big issues off the field or continue to have them

There's a couple of players in that list who are guilty by association.

Mini had one incident some years back but since has been nothing but professional and if anyone could be excused for falling off the tracks it would of been him with devastating injury after injury. But he never did, still puts in 100% every single game, off the field I can't speak highly enough of him be it media commitments or at club functions.

Don't mistake having a life with being the problem of poor culture. He might not be the player he once was but his name doesn't deserve to be dragged through the mud just because he has a friendship with his team mates and appears in the social pages.

I can see what you're getting but that's bullshit naming him, if all the players shared his attitude, respect & love towards our club we'd be so much better for it.

        - Mark Gasnier stole Mini's phone in order to make rude test messages.
        - Gasnier and Mini were questioned in France and Mini was busted for breaking a Maccas store window.
        - Mini was suspended for binge drinking... Sticky said "the problem with our culture is they only drink once a week, so they binge drink."

We bought the old Bulldogs culture it was as simple as that. And we are now paying for it.

Time to get rid of the lot of them and start again.

I will stick my neck out here and say the binge drinking culture exists at every club but not with every player. The Roosters would have to be one of the most scrutinised clubs in the comp and one of the reasons is where most of the players live - near the city.

You reckon Watmough is off the drink and making sure he is being responsbile? I would doubt it. I would think the club would make sure that someone was watching him and making sure he does not p1ss on any windows in the near future.

When I was their age I was a p1ss head. My mates were all p1ss heads. I am pretty sure it has been around a while this binge drinking.

Maybe we should just recruit Mormons...

That is a lame reasoning. They are meant to be professional athletes mate. Ever see Roger Federer binge drinking every weekend? No because he is a professional athelete who chooses to act and train like one. Lets face it its the footballers that are probably the only groups of athletes that drink regularly

Have a look at the amount of games a tennis player plays? Over a tournament he might play 6 games in 2 weeks. NRL players play once a week. Massively different types of athletes and focus.

Footballers are the only group of athletes that drink regularly? Probably true. Why are we so surpised when this is highlighted?

Tennis players will play for pretty well 12 months a year non stop. Games can last upwards of 4 hours and you're on a hard court with the spotlight on YOU the whole time because it is an individual sport.

If Federer plays like cr@p because he's hung over it's simple... he doesn't get paid and will likely lose his sponsorship cash. ANY controversies (including blowing up on court let alone doing a Hayne style head-butt or Hindmarsh-style punch... he'll be fined severely and probably lose the match in addition to sponsorship deals.)

Think sprinting... the top sprinters have split seconds between winning and losing races. They also have the same sponsorship thing (get in trouble... nobody will sponsor you coz it's their brand name being damaged when you go on the piss, have a tantrum or act like an idiot!) Since 1 beer could make you 0.01 seconds slower, you'll find individual athletes (freaks like Phelps aside) will not drink regularly (if at all.)

                    ---

Rugby league's still my sport of choice, but just saying... I agree. Most professional athletes treat their bodies as their temples/means of making money. A shop keeper won't trash his own shop because he'll lose money and reputation. A jockey won't abuse his horse or do anything that might hurt its performance because one injury could mean the end of a career. League players should all think that way if they are serious...

This story is just not about Watts and by some association Carney. Its about the Roosters culture and the club. It all starts from the top, the management is weak and the players (employees) think they can get away with anything and are a protected species. Lets not forget the drunk half naked coach approaching a room, the defecating naked player in a hotel corridor, lets not forget the current player caught and found guilty of drug possession, the previous drunken aggressive behaviour toward women by certain players, prior to this current incident. A team/club with convictions. What does the the club managment do what do the administrators do? Where is the example? This culture is endemic in the club. Strong leadership begins at the top and without respect there is no loyalty. I guess that's why Samsung a multinational pulled out as a sponsor but the roosters kept on the board an executive that resigned as CEO from a leading upmarket retailer after a well publiced sex harrasment case . The roosters arent just a club in crisis they are a disgrace. Bring on the independent commission to hand out punishment to clubs not this farce adminstration that allows clubs to take matters in their hands. The roosters have brought the game into direpute time after time.

Speaking of Henny Penny, how did Newcastle do it for all those years, shelter the highest profile player who had a thing for disco lollies, and still picked up a couple of premierships?

I thought it was a pre-requisite. Just like Frampton Comes Alive was in the suburbs in the late '70's.
