  • Carney - Depression

Some of the ACT radio stations today have been hammering the word that Carney's "suspended" because he's got depression and has been working through it for a while now. Word is that he's not coming back until his depression's under control because people are getting fed up with dealing with it (alcohol aside.)

Not trying to excuse any of his actions, but any word on this? Raiders fans love stirring BS about him, so I haven't taken it too seriously.

One DJ said he'd spoken with a Raiders contact who said that the big problem for Carney is depression and alcohol's just a side effect... many Raiders apparently got sick of his mood swings and erratic behaviour while sober, but the booze made it even worse. One described his depression as unworkable because he would refuse to help himself at times and refused to talk to others who tried to help him out.

    Any confirmations on this one?

Treating depression with a depressant, ie alcohol, is not a good idea.

That would explain a lot to be honest.

When things are going well and Todd's feeling good (2010) he has no urge to drink.

As soon as a few injuries come into it, he isn't playing footy and feeling under pressure he turns to booze.

In hindsight, it all makes a lot more sense. I'm a little surprised the club didn't try address it earlier (i.e. 6 weeks ago) if that IS the case.

Many with depression self medicate with alcohol. If you them add anti depression drugs then you have a lethal mix. This kid needs treatment, his life is bigger than rugby league.

Why did he "turn to booze" after such a ripper season which culminated in being selected in the Kangaroo Squad?

I don't believe alcholism is a good enough excuse.

He just needs to sort his sh!t out.

Depression is like asthma in that doctors are quick to pidgeon hole any mood based affliction associated with the mental as being "depression". It is very difficult to recognise someone who is depressed as it effects people is vastly different ways.

If one good thing comes out of this situation is that we will see a concerted effort from the NRL to put more emphasis on recognising it in our players.

            Chook.

Watts and a few of his so-called mates probably got to him.

                Exactly.

The longer Mason is in Toulon or Bordeaux or wherever he is off to next, and Watts is back in North Qld, the better.

According to Kent on Back Page last night it was the Kangaroo squad bonding that was the turning point apparently.

                    So it wasn't depression then.

No, the gyst of it was he'd been off the piss until then and he also said something along the lines of Darius Boyd being his big drinking buddy at the time.

Bennett put Boyd up to it to bring us down knowing we'd be nothing without Carney.

                          Chook.

When he was away from the influence and structure the club provided. That's consistent with what I've heard from a few sources and how rep football has been costly to us.

Richie Barnett got his face smashed.
Mini got caught up in the sauce scandal.
Bennett and Lockyer convinced Hodges to leave Sydney.
As well as losing players during club rounds.

Rep football has not done us any favours at all.

I think the turning point can be pinned down to him not being picked to play until late in the piece.

He gets the high of being picked to be in the squad for his country then he sits on his arse for six weeks where he has time to party with Bennett's catamite Boyd.
