Originally posted by John Corey View PostMine is pretty boring for footy fans. I read a lot of novels, particularly by Nelson DeMille. He has a character in some of his books, John Corey. A very funny, sarcastic , smart ass NYPD cop who just loves to break all the rules. Being in that job for most of my life I sort of admired the way he did things, fiction or not.
And JT I take offense John Corey is not one of your faves 😱

I'll give this a whirl.
Back in the day in the UK, all the teams had these really weird and wonderful old nicknames. Bradford were the Steam Pigs, Warrington were The Wire, Wigan the Riversiders, Hull were the Airlie Birds, etc. Anyway my team, Leeds, were the Loiners.
When they started Super league in 96 or so, all the teams ditched the old names for something more marketable. Bradford became the Bulls, Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, Hull were the Sharks. Anyhow, Leeds decided to have a vote of their members, and I heard that 95% voted for the Loiners. The committee decided that no one knew what the fark a Loiner was, and they decided to become the Rhinos, even though no one had even tossed this up until the week of the vote.
So being old school, I decided to keep the Loiners name alive. And the Kingsgrove part is obvious, even though I live in Marrickville these days.

Names that bring a smile to my face when I see them. It has nothing to do with what they say or who they are.
My faves include:
Amco Cup
Pass the Ball
Crikey Chris
The Ticket
Buddy
The Axe
Tommy Smith
I am sure there are more that I will remember when I think about them.
Anyone else have some favourites? It's not a popularity contest. It can't have anything to do with what they say or who they are. Just the names man.
Actually, not wanting to sound... queer... but I've always like the name Johnny Tobin...great player. I wonder how people come up with names? Random? I had never been into posting on forums and this is the only one so I thought the name should have some meaning. I suppose if I joined many forums then any name would do.
