  • Rumour: Roosters offer Todd Carney 3 year deal

WHISPERS of a Todd Carney return to the NRL in 2016 have now turned into screams with reports emerging the Roosters may be planning a sensational play for the five-eighth who they sacked just under four years ago.

Carney, who recently won a wrongful dismissal case against the Sharks, is likely to be given the green light to return to NRL if he adheres to strict behavioural guidelines.
Despite being sacked by the club in 2011 for a string of misdemeanors, the playmaker is still admired by Roosters supremo Nick Politis and has a strong relationship with coach Trent Robinson who was an assistant to Brian Smith in Carney’s Dally M-winning season in 2010.

It is believed certain Roosters officials have reached out to Carney and are reportedly planning to engage in formal talks with the 28-year-old’s Super League Club Catalans about the possibility of an early release from his three-year deal.

Robinson also has strong ties to the French-based outfit having coached there for two seasons between 2011-2012.

The Roosters premiership-winning five-eighth James Maloney is off-contract at season’s end and has attracted the interest of a number of clubs, primarily Manly.

Maloney and his management have only engaged in preliminary contract talks with the club and is seeking a long-term deal to remain at Bondi.
The Sea Eagles have also been linked with Carney as they hunt down a superstar half to build the club around following the shock departures of Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran at season’s end.

If the Roosters are to capture Carney’s signature it would be a major coup for a club who already boasts the most talented roster in the NRL.
It would also see Carney reunite with Mitchell Pearce in the halves. The talented duo not only helped take the Roosters all the way to the grand final in 2010 but also represented NSW in Origin in 2012.

In his time at the Tri-colours, Carney racked up 44 games and scored a total of 316 points.

Its a joke, Carney is finished as a top line NRL halve. The only explanation i can think of if this rumour is true, is the club is screwing with Manly over Carney deal to warn them off Maloney deal.

I don't get why we would want the extra spotlight on the club again.

if we want him we will get him Also whilst risky if we can swing this It would mean not having to pay a ransom for Jimmy (who is probably worth it ) and we could get Carney on a basrgain basement deal as he would be looking to resurrect his NRL career Effectively we could have a player of similar in fact probably better ability ( althoigh errant in his off field ways ) but for half the price Shrewd business if this can be pulled off and Carney keeps his behaviour in check

          God no!!!!!

Also giving Manly a free kick at securing a premiership winning and superior goal kicking 5/8.who build clubs cultures not destroys them.

Let POS and Robbo run the show Uncle Nick!

Carney is talented and I enjoyed the ride in 2010 and feel he was harshly treated last year...but not back at our great club.

Further if we offer Carney 3 year deal I bet SoH will head back to Dragons after next year. I figured he wait 2 more years under Jimmy but not 3. However reading between the line s Jimmy may want 3-4 years with us. That may have swayed Politis to make overtures to Carney.

Carney also had a lot of serious injuries since his last stint here, torn achilles tendon, several severe hamstring tears, ankle problems and busted ribs.

we don't need another Uncle Nick reclaimation project.

I dont think we will be paying Carney anywhere near the money we will have to fork out to retain Maloney I think this is a salary cap issue move for the future Im not entirely pro in regards to signing Carney but can see the bsuiness side of it A player of arguably better ability for half the price

Probably no reason carney would be a bargain, clubs are desperate for quality players, titans, manly, raiders to name a few.

With the new substitute rules coming in, some players may just not get offered contracts anymore if decent minutes cannot be played, so even more money will be available to spend on backline players.

Carney can probably make good money overseas, so i don't think he would come back here for peanuts, unless he is well compensated from his termination at Cronulla.

I doubt he will be half the price.

I don't dispute he is probably more naturally talented mate. However I think Jimmy brings more points to our team and although small and will miss tackles due to his size is a better communicator and defender than Carney.

No offence mate but your signature in this discussion is rather ironic lol!

                  Cheers!

If he was cheap he would be a good signing but meh. The fact is his form has never been close to what it was in 2010. I have a soft spot for him and it would not be a terrible signing at all but I still don't think it is a great idea.

Oh wow, is this a nightmare?

His legs are patched together by string. And he's a ****ing frootloop who can't control himself.

2010 Carney was immense. But way too much has happened in the 5 years since.

Hopefully this turns out to be bullshit.

This would be such a massive step backwards for the club. He is nowhere near the player he was in 2010. In fact it would be a massive stretch to say he has outperformed Maloney on the field since then so the odds of him doing so in the next few years are extremely remote. In fact the odds are he will not even see out a contract anyway. As Fletch said he has had many injuries and apart from being a basket case off the field, is mentally fragile on it.

I would rather go with Jackson Hastings than this guy, at least we know he will put his body on the line, something Carney refused to do in 2011. He also isn't going to be the bargain people think he might be. There is a lack of decent halves in the NRL and many clubs will be desperate to sign him. Let him go to some desperate basket case club. A big no from me.

Outside of Jonathan Thurston he's without a shadow of a doubt IMO the most naturally gifted 5/8 of this generation.

The pros and cons have already been well outlined here, he's not going to cost as much as Maloney but he has had a very poor run with injuries over the past few seasons. So it's a tough one.

At the end of the day though if Robbo wants to back himself to bring him back to the club I say Welcome Home Toddy. They only ever spent one season together (2010) and not much more needs to be said about that.
