  • Win or the fight?

I believe I'm copping some undue flack and condecending comments over this one... so thought it deserved a thread of its own.

Personally I'm a RUGBY LEAGUE fan first before being a Roosters fan. I don't want us to lose, but winning isn't everything. Of course I want us to win the GF!!! Who doesn't? But to me most of the fun is watching us fight every week and watching. A number of things interest me, including but not limited to:
    - Our tactics (and how they grow over time)
    - The lives of our players (ups and downs)
    - Watching our emotions/attitudes.
    - Our luck.
    - Analysis of micro-aspects by professionals (and forum members.)

IMO with footy the journey is more important than the destination. I don't just want us to win every game!!! Sure, I welcome that, but winning every week would be BORING. For me having challenges and uncertainty is VERY important.

Seriously, what's wrong with that, and why am I getting so much flack about it? Of course the ultimate goal is to win the GF every year, but the big trophy moments are nothing without good, honest work in between. Sure it's professional sport, but a lot of loyalty and club spirit still exist. I'd hate to see us win a GF if it meant for example dropping half our team + sacking Smith for Bennett. I believe our boys have the goods (unlike many it seems.) I'm farking sick of the Mini bashing for one!!!! He was on fire against the Dragons and did enough to prove he's still got the goods to any doubters...

I'm not claiming I'm farking Gus Gould or whatever, but to those saying "you're not serious" or "you have no idea..."
Whatever... I do know my $hit when it comes to footy!!! Been a fan my whole life, played for 20+ years and have been through a lot with the Roosters. Hell I'm no Sterlo or Gus or whatever the fark, but who else is?!?!?!?

If you're gonna dis my opinions then fark off coz I seriously don't care what you think. I know my $hit and that's why winning isn't everything. Not bagging those who just go out there to watch the wins and wanna drop Smithy/Mini for Bennett/Boyd... but get farked and eat your humble pie when after dissing all our players every time we lose, when some of those guys show some passion and start showing form!!

I look forward to the end of the season when all these guys saying:
    - "ooooh we're gonna get the spoon"
    - "We ahould sack Mini, Carney, Anasta, Pearce, Perrett, Myles, SKD, FPN, JWH + play the Jets instead, coached by Wayne Bennett"
    - "Smith should be sacked coz we've only won 2 outta 7 games and cqn't beat the Dragons + Broncos..."

All fark off into their little corners coz we make the finals with Smith as our coach and our boys do us proud without being replaced by the entire Storm/Broncos/Dragons squads (or the Newtown Jets for that matter.)

I'm not sure about others, but I actually don't want to sack half the team. I want anasta, mini, Myles, riddell gone. The rest - I think we've got an excellent young squad.

But my main gripe now is with smith - he's an idiot. We are going downhill again at a huge rate. Last year looks like a fluke and he seems clueless.

We need either Bennett, bellamy or Gus. The rest are a lottery. We will once again waste the good young talent that we have at our club.

It sickens me that a small fullback local junior like towers wasn't given a go by master idiot smith when small fullbacks like gardiner and now barber are shining. Just like Gus said on the roast, those players need someone to believe in them. We don't need an idiot who has pre-conceived ideas that wingers must be big and hence he is playing BJ put of position.

I could go on all night about idiot smith. We are in big trouble again and it will only get worse til we sack the idiot. It's a shame but that's how it is. I feel sorry for uncle nick, he deserves so much better.

And Fred,I know you love Nick.
In some ways I do as well.
For a smart man he makes some poor decisions regarding footy on a regular basis.

You cannot listen to the players.
You cannot listen to the sycophants.
You cannot listen to the armchair intelligent fan.

Nick has made one brave decision in the last 20 years.
That was to employ a rookie coach with self belief and a good knowledge of player behavior.
        Ricky Stuart

Gus has massive influence with Nick
We never hear from Gus when things go to sh1t.
And right now, Smith has lost the helm and the silence from Gus is deafening

Daniel Anderson for me. Two time NRL Grand Finalist, Super League Grand Final winner, three time Challenge Cup winner and a World Club Challenge winner (against a Bennett coached Broncos filled with stars). If he can't win us a comp then we shouldn't be playing first grade. He takes no crap from the players and tells it how it is. Just ask Hayne. May have cost him his job but Hayne fired and they nearly made the finals for it. He's like Smith except his style of play is far better suited to our squad and he has won something. If Politis can handle him been in control, and with the talent we have in the squad, then we have a big, big chance with him. He needs the support from Politis though. If the players are allowed to run the show like we did when Mason was here...

Let me make it absolutely clear though that I am still of the opinion that Smith MUST see out his contract.

Good post mate. I agree with alot of what you said. I think we need to stick loyal and support our club. Not bag them, especially after a great performance on the weekend. That attitude they showed on the weekend will win more games than we lose.
And Minichiello is a legend of our club, and has been great all year.

I'm with ism22 and gumdoggy. Last year was not a fluke. Smithy saved our club. He brought back our respectability. Politis was desperate at the time when our club and our reputation/image took a hammering. Our clubs reputation and image turned the corner as soon as Smithy signed the contract. When Politis signed Smithy, it wasn't to win a title, it was to save our club and its reputation. Lets face it everyone, we were tragic in 2009. Sponsors abandoned us, the media and the public detested us, we were a joke. I am sure uncle Nick had to bank roll the club himself. I think most of us have forgotten how bad things were. Smithy and the players took us to the GF last year, farkn amazing! Everyone pinned us for a place or two above the spoon because we know how hard it can be to rebuild a club. In one year or less, we got our sponsors back, reputation and winning ways back. Granted that nearly all teams were under performing last year. This year, most teams have rebuilt themselves. We are dealing with a better and more competitive NRL season. Folks, all teams are better this year. Its not that our team and coach is really bad, everyone is better. It is a more challenging year and we are suffering from GF hangover. Its not easy for the coach or players. There is no magic potion for winning games or winning a title, its a process. In this forum, everybody is frustrated, I know, we just want to win and hopefully a title. But imagine if we didn't get Smithy. There was nobody around. We would of got an inexperienced new comer. We would have struggled last year to make the 8. We would of struggled financially and it would of been hard to find sponsors and members. We would still be dealing with all the insults from 2009 if we didn't have such a stellar year. All that rubbish was wiped away with the results from 2010. We should be grateful to Smithy and the players and show some restraint and patience and give them a go and show our support. Our team needs to readjust to this years cream of the crop. Hey, we all got through 2009, this is a walk in the park! We have a great coach and good players and now nearly 10,000 members (who would of thought?), it could of been worse this year, so everyone just hang in there. Go Easts!

ism, I concur with what you say and I think that just because we lose a game that it does not mean we have to string up the team. If we are competitive then we can take some consulation from that.

A number of posters have all the answers with their suggestions. They would bet their left nut on it but the thing to remember is that very few of the changes they demand will ever come to fruition as they do not coach the team. It comes down to an opinion and rarely experience. For most losing is NOT an option and if we do lose then questions will be asked.

Start a thread on over rated players and you would probably get most of the Australian team mentioned by one person or another.

The bottom line is that if you have an opinion and people don't agree with it then you are likely to be challenged. You may be called all names under the sun on here but I will bet my left nut that if you met those very same people face to face then the discussion would be less hostile. That is how a forum works.

So don't take it personally mate, and keep giving your opinions and views. If they generate discussion then they are doing their job.

                        JL

This seems like a good enough vent of spleen.

In that case, i will indulge as well:

Smith must see out his contract. Smith must also earn it.

The only players that should be sacked are: Graham, FPN and Ryles. Fred you are wrong about Nate as you have been for the time he's been here. He will again be first man picked for QLD.

Without Uncle Nick there would be no Roosters.

With him there has been 1 premiership and a dozen Grand Finals. This speaks volumes.

                          He cant close the deal.

We need a new sugar daddy. One without the hangers on.

And lastly Newtown. Ive always said it is a fruitless marriage. Theyve unearthed zero. What is the reason they even exist? Why do we entertain this? We may as well side up with Central Coast and tap the Hunter talent, so to speak.

There's noting in Zetland, Ersko or Newtown. Not since Ghost moved out.

I said it when we joined with them. nothing will come of it. Nothing has.

I agree with this - did anyone see the article in the SMH on Saturday about them being the Betty OFrd CLinic - the idiot that was quoted said that they will help all players - like they did with Mason hey? they are an embarassemnt to this great club. Players dont like going back there as the competition and facilities are substandard. In 2006 they had the best team in the competition and still couldnt win - now all those players have gone elsewhere cos if they stayed they would have to play for newtown (soward, hall, kirk etc)

This sacking players business is stupid. It is the same team that got us to the Grand Final last year. Pretty much the team that got us to the final was:

Minichiello, Perrett, Kenny-Dowall, Linnett, Graham, Carney, Pearce, Ryles, Friend, Nuuausala, Anasta, Aubusson, Myles, BENCH: Kouparitsas, Conn, Hargreaves, Kennedy

Leilua and Masoe emerged in the late year run. Our team now is not too much different, only now Symonds is available, Leilua is a wing regular, Graham and Linnett are fighting for the centre spot, Masoe is a regular, and the bench utility spot is now taken by Riddell.
