our recruitment/retention was built on an assumption players would accept less to stay at a successful club, once the first one left (RTS) its like the house of cards began to fall apart.

the only positive I can see from this situation is hopefully our management won't be as naïve to expect loyalty discounts from players anymore and adjust accordingly.

Im not so sure all that preceding analysis is correct.

. Firstly JWH,SKD decided to stay despite higher offers elsewhere. That's not the same as saying the club deliberately made a low offer and expected loyalty to prevail. It just happened that they chose loyalty over the bigger bucks. RTS is a different case...it wasn't ONLY about the money...he wanted to return to NZ FOR FAMILY REASONS. There is precious little the roosters could do about that.

And Maloney is yet another different case. He wants to stay had an acceptable offer from the Roosters but once DCE gets a million, Maloney's value goes up. Unfortunately DCEs contract post Melbourne game made The Roosters offer appear low, not that it was lowered, and Maloney was more about getting a longer contract than just 2 years. If you were able to get $700k instead of $450 K I am sure you would all take it. Unfortunately for those who have stayed for less pre DCE CONTRACT aren't going to be so impressed with how things are evolving. But I wouldn't want to be Manly players playing with Million dollar man. THAT WILL REALLY CAUSE FUTURE UNREST.

Moa on the other hand because of his shorter playing minutes may not fit well into the proposed lower interchange regime next year, although personally I would keep him and not subside next years contract payment to him by subsidizing him to anyone else..

On balance I believe the Roosters contract management analysis is overall correct.

I would imagine that for a quiet young guy like Daniel Toupou the prospect of changing sports and moving to France would not be overly appealing. Sure there would be a good paycheck on offer but it does not sound very attractive compared to staying in the NRL. Still I am surprised that he isn't being offered $300-450K or thereabouts by another NRL team. I could not imagine him earning much more than about $275K at the Roosters.

At the end of the day we have a salary cap. Our players have gone up in value and we have to let some go. It goes in cycles and we now just have to develop our young players.
If you look at other teams we still have a solid roster.
It's a pity we didn't win last year and it looks like we are going to let another golden opportunity go this year.
We may be in for a couple of mediocre years but you can't win a comp every year.

As if the club doesn't have it under control.

Our board could run this country.

                        Uncle wasn't born yesterday!

Perhaps the low ball offer was calculated as there is someone better on the way.

Yes but the way we lost Roger means they were more Gillard than Hawke.

All I know is that Politis isn't the sort of guy to patiently sit through a couple of years watching an average football side. He demands immediate success and will definately have something up his sleeve. He usually gets who he wants. For him to allow a player like RTS to go, there is something brewing.
