He may be ok with the ball in his hand, but defensively he is terrible, last year we got shafted by the ref as well, easy to get momentum on the back of penalties, and we are a different team this year.

If we don't pick him then the final bench spot goes to our 9th best forward who eats into the minutes or our better forwards which makes no sense at all. If anything players like SST and Liu are deserving of more minutes, not less. There's no fatigue issues with our forward pack.

There's also a long term view to be taken, sure Friend can play 80 mintues every week but why not give him a quick rest in the regular season and make sure he's fit an firing for when it really matters... in the finals. There's also Hastings long term development which it'll only benefit.

I can think of numerous reasons why picking a utility on the bench makes sense, I struggle to think of one reason why it doesn't.

It all just comes down to the fact that he's got a famous surname and that seems to upset a lot of people. Get over it.
You know what positions Maubs can cover.
Fergo can cover FB. SKD centre or wing.
SST has even played in the centres.
We have enough utility to not need Hastings.
It doesn't upset me he has a famous surname. It annoys me that people rate him because of his surname. These same people who have barely seen the guy play.

And it's not like he negatively affects the team when he comes on by any means. His defence is very good. His service is good. He knows when to play a short side. For a bloke playing out of position he does a very good job. And he'll be the 6 next year so he could use some first grade experience. I feel like you're the only one that has an issue with his surname. Robbo and O'Sullivan would have the same opinion of him if his name was Smith.
          Maubs can cover 5/8.
His first game for the Roosters was as a 5/8. If Pearce or Maloney goes down, Maubs comes in. Or Maubs goes to hooker and Jake plays in the halves.

Maybe Hastings is there as the backup goal kicker and utility?
In tight games, goal kicking can be the difference.

              That's a valid point.

I find Roberts to be the worst half in the comp from the few games I've seen him play and wonder how he ever made it. He'll probably be dumped to reserves next year when Hodgo goes in. As for pulling our pants down, well how often do we have crappy teams doing that to us in the last couple of years...eg Cronulla? Maybe we should get belts for these games.

Didn't really know where to post this but what's everyones thoughts on the away supporters bay (bay 50) at Hunter Stadium? Never been there before so I'm not sure what it's like.

Luke Kelly takes the cake for the worst half in the game.

This post and the one before it rank as the silliest in the history of The 'Pen (in my opinion).

Maubs is my Fav player, but pls never let him play 5/8 again, not sure which was worse Maubs or Setaimata Sa at 5/8.
Maubs is the best in the game at running off ball players and creating space by a deft change of angle and pace.
Jake could play a traditional 7 role in a pinch, but not 6.

Exactly. Having done something before does not make it logical to do it again. Just because you wore nappies as a toddler it doesn't mean you revert to them when your undies are in the wash.

Plus when Aubbo played 5/8 we were hardly the squad to challenge for the finals, let alone the comp.
