If we don't pick him then the final bench spot goes to our 9th best forward who eats into the minutes or our better forwards which makes no sense at all. If anything players like SST and Liu are deserving of more minutes, not less. There's no fatigue issues with our forward pack.
There's also a long term view to be taken, sure Friend can play 80 mintues every week but why not give him a quick rest in the regular season and make sure he's fit an firing for when it really matters... in the finals. There's also Hastings long term development which it'll only benefit.
I can think of numerous reasons why picking a utility on the bench makes sense, I struggle to think of one reason why it doesn't.
It all just comes down to the fact that he's got a famous surname and that seems to upset a lot of people. Get over it.
Fergo can cover FB. SKD centre or wing.
SST has even played in the centres.
We have enough utility to not need Hastings.
It doesn't upset me he has a famous surname. It annoys me that people rate him because of his surname. These same people who have barely seen the guy play.

His defence is very good. His service is good. He knows when to play a short side. For a bloke playing out of position he does a very good job. And he'll be the 6 next year so he could use some first grade experience. I feel like you're the only one that has an issue with his surname. Robbo and O'Sullivan would have the same opinion of him if his name was Smith.
His first game for the Roosters was as a 5/8. If Pearce or Maloney goes down, Maubs comes in. Or Maubs goes to hooker and Jake plays in the halves.

As for pulling our pants down, well how often do we have crappy teams doing that to us in the last couple of years...eg Cronulla? Maybe we should get belts for these games."Qui audet adipiscitur"

Exactly. Having done something before does not make it logical to do it again. Just because you wore nappies as a toddler it doesn't mean you revert to them when your undies are in the wash.
Plus when Aubbo played 5/8 we were hardly the squad to challenge for the finals, let alone the comp.Making Steve Naughton look like Vince Mellars...
