You can not play live NRL matches from their app on smart TVs. You can with replays but that is all. They only want it to be displayed "small" for live games, if you wish to watch it in full screen you have to go with Foxtel. Sucks.
Thought so otherwise Foxtel would already be obsolete.
Threats of a breakaway competition from "powerful figures" in the game with 12 clubs looking to form a league in league with Murdoch and we're one of them. Sound familiar?
Any pretence that the News Corpse stable of hacks were reporters or journalists is gone. They have all proven themselves as nothing but sock puppets to do their fossilised, irrelevant American masters bidding.
Murdoch is experiencing major butt hurt. He wanted to Ten to get the free to air rights along with Foxtel getting the pay TV rights in a joint bid that would have suited Murdoch and gave Ten a huge windfall and saving Lachlan's investment in that failing station. But the NRL saw that coming and took Murdoch's bargaining plan of a joint bid off the table. The rush to secure the AFL was panic to ensure Foxtel had a least one rights deal moving forward. But the threats of expanding that game into QLD and NSW are hollow as Foxtel knows the NRL rates higher than the AFL.
As long as the NRL holds it's nerve and waits to see what new streaming technologies are coming into play over the next 2.5 years (when the pay TV rights need to be negotiated) Foxtel and Murdoch will sweat bullets because they know if the NRL finds a new way to get its content to the it's fans bypassing Foxtel, Foxtel is 100% farked in QLD and NSW which will leave the AFL locked into a dying medium until 2022.
The NRL are in the box seat in this scenario. Let Murdoch writhe and squirm and stress for 2 years at least. With any luck this may actually kill him and wouldn't that be gloriously ironic. The code Murdoch tried to kill ends up killing him.
Set Hola to Germany and you are good to go. HD Foxtel stream for free. You need a fast net connection for this.

Chook.
Great post Chook, agree with all of it.
There was a great quote from an 'unnamed NRL official' in the SMH on Saturday "Even if we don't get the same money as the AFL, we've finally got our game back, and you cant put a price on that".
This leads me to the conclusion that this has been planned for some time.

Chook.
Well said Chook, I can't believe how many league supporters are falling for the hatchet job the News Ltd media lackeys are doing on the NRL and its hierarchy. They've had the knives out since News Ltd lost control of the game and leaking of information has stopped. The fact that the NRL did its FTA TV deal without the media having any clue that it was done and dusted proves that.
Fox needs the NRL more than NRL needs Fox - without the NRL it's Australian business will be up shyte creek. It's the NRL that brings in the subscriptions and the ratings, not the AFL, as the AFL has far better FTA coverage for a start. But it's no secret that Fox have always preferred the AFL - why do you think it has its own channel while NRL doesn't? It can't be based on viewers because NRL rates much better.
I know my Foxtel subscription would be stopped if they didn't have the NRL and I'd be switching over to whatever company did have it. I'd be only one of many and Rupert knows it.
The best thing about the next TV deal is that the NRL has control over which games are televised and when - which hopefully means the end of the Broncs playing most Friday nights and clubs like Canberra, Sharks, Storm and Cows getting their fair share of FTA coverage for their sponsors and fans, which may even attract new sponsors and fans for those clubs.
That's where Nine has failed the game dismally - it only wants to show certain clubs and the rest can wither and die as far as it is concerned. After the NRL takes control of the televising Nine will have to show whatever it's been given. As will Fox.
Supporting the RW&B, through good times and bad times.
Nobody is seriously falling for it. This whole breakaway think is a beat up. And the constant attack on Smith is totally transparent.
Acting like they had no input into it is ridiculous.
Fox will end up with four live games and a feed of the FTA games. They have no choice. Without league they would not be a viable company. Just about everyone I know would shut it off without league. I suspect the majority in NSW and Qld would be the same.
Rupert put every league fan offside with those AFL comments.
I had to laugh when one of them had the balls to hint that Gus was biased in all this because he works for Nine.
"and will be buoyed by the pay TV viewing numbers of 322,000 for Saturday night's Roosters-Broncos match compared with 60,000 for the Sydney AFL derby clash between the Swans and Giants."

Anyone notice how News employees were all positive when the initial deal was done with Nein. Then the second old Rupbert spat the dummy they all fall into line and start bagging the whole deal? Kent, Ikin, telecrap, Fox sports, the telecrap journo on the Sunday footy show. It's all agenda driven BS. All Murdoch has ever cared about is money, money, money. Good on Dave Smith (whatever his many faults), for sticking it to the greedy old so and so.
I made a post on LU that Crawley is quoting Wilson who is quoting Kent who is quoting Rothfield who is quoting Hooper - so basically Rupert has created his own Human Centipede of morons. This is what someone over there came up with. LMAO.
