  • Smith confirms Carney to return against Sharks

Sydney Roosters star Todd Carney has returned to training and spoken for the first time since his suspension by the NRL club last month for breaking a pledge not to consume alcohol.

Roosters coach Brian Smith confirmed Carney was likely to play in their game against Cronulla next weekend.

"It's good to be back," Carney said. "I've been training on my own for the last two weeks. I've got a lot of football training to do in the next week. Hopefully if I get through that and if Smithy picks me ... I'm confident."

Carney has been consulting with medical professionals since being caught drinking in Kings Cross last month.

"It's been a bit of a long haul but it's something I'll continue to keep doing. It doesn't all stop here today. It's been tough, but it's been good.

"I felt singled out, but obviously I made the mistake and I had to deal with what I was doing. I'm feeling really good. The people I'm working with outside the Roosters are helping me with that. My mind feels good and to be back training is a bonus."

    "I felt singled out"

Does he still not get it?

He was singled out, and your glossy mag was way over the top in its handling of a minor hickup in a young guys life.

You don't get it. You applauded the Titans for their piss-weak treatment of Matthew White who committed a high-range DUI (a criminal offense), yet Carney commits a low-range DUI (a misdemeanor) and you want him crucified.

Hanging around with sensationalist gutter journalists is compromising your objectivity.

Well said man. People are so ready for Carney to have his life destroyed and his career finished. I don't know how his career will progress but I sincerely hope that he overcomes his demons and fulfills his enormous potential.

Coulcn't help but notice how the telegraph buried the story yesterday of Junior Vai Vai belting the crap out of his girl and getting found guilty for it. Yestday was in a little article in the middle of the paper and not sure about today because I only saw it online.

Imagine if that was a rooster.

That's your view - there's also a school of thought that he's a repeat offender who once again let the club and his teammates down badly, and that it was time to say enough is enough. His own admissions, be they sincere or otherwise, as to his drinking and depression issues go to supporting that school of thought

The fact that in speaking about his return to the field, on the basis of medical advice suggesting he's right to go, he's still blaming others and complaining about being "singled out" is not what you want to hear someone who has supposedly addressed his issues saying

Anyway, the proof will be in the pudding when he does return, and I hope to God he is right to go

The best place for him is on the field while he is dealing with his issues that he has in his private life. I hope he can do it for his own sake as it would be a shame for one so talented to not reach their full potential.

As for the media, I bet they have been keeping an eye on him over the last few weeks but because he has not slipped up, they say nothing. He might be singled out but he is under a lot of scrutiny. That is very sad.

Yesterday in the Herald was a picture of Carney taken through a tattoo parlour window getting a tat. No story associated with the picture.

But I guess he just doesn't get it!

Toddy might well have a brilliant footballing brain, which is why we brought him to the club.

We didn't, however, hire him, to sit on his arse collecting his check.

He's not an illegal entry moocher, he's a footballer.

As great as he played last year, unfortunately you are right.

Not nearly as bad as how well they managed to hide their apology to Brett Stewart & how 'heart felt' it was.
