I am a player manager and I have an indigenous superstar on my books named Grig Englis. I am shopping him around to clubs trying to get the best deal for me and him.

Souths are keen to get his signature and they are offering $750K a year. I am in Redfern and I drop in at The Indigenous Centre For Excellence and discuss the possibilities of them using my client Mr. Englis for promotional purposes. They love the idea. We have a contract drawn up agreeing that Englis will make x appearances at corporate events and also spend x hours with the local kids and they will pay Englis $200k a year. I do the same with a local real estate agent who agrees to pay him $80k for promotional purposes.

Grig already has an agreement with Nike to pay him $200k a year too.

We sign with Souths and Grig Englis is happily getting over $1.2 million a season but only $750k is counted towards the cap.

To tidy your example up a bit more, as long as neither the Indigenous Centre or real estate are South's sponsors and neither are in turn in receipt of funding from South's in any way.

In fact any NRL club can introduce players to potential sponsors but they are prohibited from negotiating the contract terms or facilitate payment to the player.

On the NRL website they use Billy Slater as an example promoting Australian Bananas. No Storm logo's, branding etc and no mention of NRL or logo etc

That's a little different to what others are suggesting, others are suggesting that certain connected board members could call in favours with businessmen who aren't associated with the club and hence fall under the limitless TPA deals.

Their case is easy to understand, I don't fully agree but it's a realistic possibility that a group such as the thoroughbreds could pull in favours given their extensive business connections without ever leaving a trace. In this case the player is aware that this 'deal' is subjective to them playing for the Broncos and wouldn't be there otherwise.

All you've done is just given a detailed report on why you'd be a poor player manager.

Why not get the TPA deals & a contract that reflects his value as an NRL player? If I'm worth 1.2m as an NRL player why would I sign for less because I've got a second job doing using my intellectual property/brand to do promotional stuff for a real estate agent who has nothing to do with the club I play for despite residing in a similar location? That makes no rational or logical sense...

Also, Melbourne's too cold to grow bananas, so it's clearly not a ruse to get him to sign with Melbourne.

Edit: wonder if that's Melbourne's trick to keep their big 3? If they went home to QLD then questions could be raised about QLD-based sponsorships, so they all stay in Melbourne.
