Off-contract Sydney Roosters forward Boyd Cordner ticks all the boxes for the Newcastle Knights

NEWCASTLE coach Nathan Brown has made no secret of his interest in the market — specifically for a player of Boyd Cordner’s calibre.

The mass departure of experienced players has left the Knights skint on depth across the paddock, but Cordner ticks all the boxes for the rebuild.
The 23-year-old Roosters star comes off contract at the end of 2016 and Brown admits the club is keen to lure the representative second-rower back home, but his asking price could be a major roadblock.
“Boyd Cordner is a local product, he’s a very good player and he’s young so he fits a lot of ticks for our club,” Brown told foxsports.com.au.
“We’re not interested in buying older players at the moment. Boyd is probably old experience-wise but he’s only 23 or 24.
“He’s so young and he’s local. He’s a player that ticks a lot of areas where we’re looking to go. “Finance will play a part in that, but he definitely ticks a lot of boxes if you’re looking at what he brings to this club.”
Cordner was born in Taree and played junior football with the Knights before he was spotted by Roosters recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan in 2008.
He was quickly snapped up on a three-year deal that Newcastle could not match.
Once again, money could stand in the way of the Knights getting their man.
Cordner’s manager Dave Riolo denied that the Knights have made a formal offer.
However, Brown has worked with Cordner during Origin camp as the Blues assistant coach and believes he is perfect for where the club is heading.
Although the Knights are rumoured to have a stash of cash left from offloading the likes of Kurt Gidley, Beau Scott, Tyrone Roberts and Chris Houston, Brown said the club is not in a position to compete for star signings.

The Knights are up there with the Tigers as the biggest basket cases in the NRL. I would be confident that they would have to pay massive overs for him to even consider it and I just don't think they have the cash to do it

If Knights don't get Cordner another club will pay the overs for him... Roosters Back row priorities should be Tauks, Sonnys return, Aubbo, Butcher, Liu, that other back rower.......... Our next premiership winners!

Knights will take out the wooden spoon next season imo.

They'll need more than Cords to be competitive.

The only player listed there in Cordners class is SBW. The rest wouldn't tie his boot laces

See , Roosters are evil fancy stealing players off the knights!

Nathan Brown is another matter altogether, coz that d1ckhead has been on my sh1tlist since the year the poor bastard retired.
Unwarrented attack on my club Browny,.............. but on the old wall, I copped crap off the old current in-crowd for knocking him.
            Sympathy vote there.

Brown and Newcastle are probably a good fit.

I reckon Cordner's got a bit more sense.

And, the less said about Mr Riolo , aside from his heroic efforts as Illawarra fullback............(under rated player, and great bloke I'm sure).

Nothing I just wrote is breaking any rules btw.

Brown stands by his opinion publicly , and so have I.

Cords would be mad to go there unless they pay ridicoulous overs. I thought Manly was after him.

FWIW Brian Canavan at the fan day sounded pretty confident we would keep him.

Maybe Guerra ticks the boxes for the Knights.....just sayin'.

Rubbish! Tauks on Cordners edge would be far more devastating and Aubbos not far off Cordner on all fronts..

He comes from Newcastle? Bit early in his career to head home

Taukeihao plays in the middle and doesn't play on an edge and even if he did is still not in Cordner's class. Aubbo is a great utility player but is a poor mans Boyd Cordner. Put all three on the open market and see which player gets the most interest, guarantee you it won't be your two

Anyone who doesn't want to retain cordner has lost the plot

I think Cords will be loyal as we were to him through a fair few ops. I'm thinking 3-4 year extension.

                          Chook.

Tauks is an edge backrower/centre, yes he does play in the middle for us and does it well but was a centre/backrower. And as far as the open market goes that is my point, Cordner can go.

Indeed the game against the Warriors showcased this.

In a couple years our back row will hopefully be

                              11. Cordner
                              12. SST
                              13. Liu

                              I'd be happy with that.
