  • New crackdown on play the ball...

Jared is ****eddddd. 10 penalties a game from his play the balls alone

Players told to use foot to play-the-ball or risk being penalised while in attack

THE “tunnel ball” farce which has sent rugby league purists into a spin is over with the NRL to crack down on illegal play-the-balls.

Clubs have been issued a warning for players to use their foot to play-the-ball or risk being penalised while in attack.

Former top-level referee Shayne Hayne was at Gold Coast Titans training on Tuesday to issue the edict alongside emerging referee Michael Gordon.

Multiple players were penalised in the opposed practice session for rolling the ball through their legs without making an attempt to put their foot on it.

The crackdown means offenders like Andrew Fifita will have the spotlight on them while they have the ball.

Titans prop Luke Douglas said the players had been warned to expect a tough stance on the ruck during pre-season trial matches.
“There’s a couple of interpretations they’re changing this year,” he said.

“They’re going to crack down on it in the trials. You have to play it with your foot.

“You see a lot of guys just roll it between their legs and it becomes a game of touch.

“You want to get the history back into the game.”
The NRL is striving to clean up the ruck and improve the quality of the contest.

Interchanges have been reduced from 10 to eight this season while a shot clock will be implemented during stoppages.

I totally agree with this. It gets like touch footy sometimes with Jared and Fifita. The ref should just keep blowing penalties until they get the message.
If it was good enough for Ron Coote, Bill Mullins and Arthur Beetson to get their foot to the ball, then surely the modern day player can do the same.

I agree. Whatever the refs do as long as they are consistent I have no problem with it. However, consistency seems to be a major issue with the NRL.

                Absolutely.

This crackdown is great in theory.

I'm just worried that they'll be inconsistent and overly target the likes of JWH. Granted he's a serial offender but each ptb should be judged on its merits.

Alas we know they don't officiate that way.

Both in attack and defense , at any PTB where the Player plays the ball and steps forward and blocks the markers they should be pinged as well for "moving off the mark".

If both sides A & D , stand up in a direct line without interfereing with each other then alot of the problems around the PTB will be eliminated.

Jarred Waerea Hargeaves does not make even an attempt to pretend that he is playing the ball and he will be an even bigger penalty target than he already is unfortunately.

I believe that we scored a try after a Roy Asotasi penalty for an incorrect play the ball in the opening match of the season that the NRL decided to crack down on the play the balls, perhaps this was in season 2011.

The enemy can start penalising GI for starters for his stepping off the mark and fend when playing the ball yet it won't happen for a protected species who thinks nsw is in qld.
