    England's Noble on Roosters' radar
    Glenn Jackson | May 18, 2009

FORMER Great Britain coach Brian Noble has been linked with the Sydney Roosters as part of a revamped coaching staff - one which will still include Brad Fittler.

The Herald understands Fittler is likely to be given another season - with the experienced Noble on staff for guidance - because officials are loath to sack a club legend.

It is believed they will attempt to secure Noble in a coaching director role, but a number of Fittler's support staff are in the firing line.

Senior Roosters officials are thought to have effectively written off this season and will quickly turn their attention to 2010. A player clean-out has begun, with Craig Fitzgibbon agreeing to join Hull FC and Mark O'Meley under pressure.

The blowtorch has also been applied to Fittler, though, after the Roosters suffered their seventh loss in 10 rounds on Saturday night - defeated 38-6 by Newcastle for their fifth loss in the past six matches.

Fittler said yesterday he wanted "another go" at the job, but that is believed to be all he will receive. Officials may offer him a one-year deal to see how he fares with Noble by his side. Doubts have been raised about whether Noble will be coach at Wigan next season and he has expressed a desire to coach in the NRL before, putting his hand up for the Cronulla job in 2007 after Stuart Raper's sacking.

Roosters officials are also believed to be concerned about the quality of prospective replacements for Fittler should they opt to sack the premiership-winning five-eighth.

Craig Bellamy's assistants at Melbourne, Stephen Kearney and Michael McGuire, are both accomplished and well-respected, but, while the former is the New Zealand coach, they both have less NRL experience than Fittler. South Sydney have denied that their own coaching director, John Lang, will head to the Roosters.

Yesterday, Fittler admitted that officials at the club would be making some "tough decisions".

"You would like another go because I enjoy coaching," he said. "I can see a good future at the club. There's going to be some tough decisions and players have to jump on board. Some things have to change.

"I'm going to put my hand up and I want to do it. What the club do is up to the club. They have to run their own business. They're looking for success [and] in whatever areas they feel they can improve they're going to have to look into those avenues and angles.

"It's a tough gig, there's no doubt … [but] I'm not worried about it. I just go in there and do my job and move on."

While Fittler may survive the Roosters' troubles this season, there are doubts about whether assistant Paul Young, long-time trainer Ron Palmer and Fittler's former halves partner Adrian Lam, currently in the role of technical director, will survive past this season. Coincidentally, Lam has been touted as a possible successor to Noble at Wigan.

"Our game is about winning, there's no doubt," Fittler said. "I would like to say I am sweet, we're building a future and all that sort of stuff.

"Our fans want to win, our board want to win, out players want to win and our coaches want to win. We have to find a winning culture and a winning way. When you're not winning, things are not going to be that great."

So is this a good thing if it comes off? Opinions on Noble?

Obviously he has had plenty of SL coaching experience but no NRL experience which is a concern. I would prefer John Lang had a role either as coach or director. Maybe Stephen Kearney to replace Fittler would be a goer. Difinately needs to be sorted asap as players are starting to get snapped up quickly.

Is it a stupid question to ask why the all-knowing Gus Gould hasn't stepped in to fix this mess and assist his friend Brad Fittler?

              I love Freddy..

He is in my top 5 alltime roosters players..

              BUT

He needs someone to help him out with this coaching rort,'cause he aint cutting the mustard..

The amount of neglected areas in our game is mind boggling..

We don't compete in the "one percenters" in the game..

We show no fight or desperation..

A prime example was in the storm game the other week,we put a kick into the in goal area,& Slater had major problems reading the bounce, yet we had ONE player chasing the kick,he missed Slater, who made it easily back into the field of play...

That ONE play told me everything about the attitude of our players..

Faaaark it sucks being a passionate roosters supporter at the moment..

I'm still nowhere near over the Souffs game yet

I have issues with the coaching.

Having inside balls and bombs as our only two attacking plays shows theres a real problem. Mentally and physically we are the weakest team in the comp. Our change of captian late last season has delivered many more losses than wins.

                Those issues are coaching problems.

I still wonder about the players though. When they didnt like what dOpes was saying they didnt put in and as soon as Freddy took over everyones attitudes changed and we were a different side. Last season we had a few new players looking to impress and we did start the season on fire. But as the season went on mentally it got all "too hard" and we kept getting to leads in games and finishing poorly. Teams know now to compete with us for 20mins of each 1/2 and we will wilt, then they step up a gear and we will almost give up.

Freddy didnt actually build this team. I wonder who hed let go of or keep if he had the chance to get the team he wants???

Look at DA at Watsamatta. It will take a year or two to clean out that lot and get the players he wants.

I wonder will Noble get the "respect" of the players we have??? Will they "believe" in his methods??? Will he be given a fair change to develop the team he requires to win???

The real problems IMO are higher up in the club. We make decisions on a whim. We sign players for short term gain, but sign them long term. How often are our best players looking for a new contract, but when they get the long term deal their form turns to shit???? Look at this season Myles, FPN, Shack are all off contract and have been our best. How long will that last???

IMO Gus is the man we really need. Anyone whose ever met the man and talked footy leave his presence with their minds blown. He has that presence and makes people believe. Average players step up with Gus.

Smith had no player respecting him at Newcaslte this time last year, I wonder how many do now?

I think sometimes too much focus is on what the players like or think....

It seems to me the wheels fell off second half last year, about the time Fitzy was dumped as captain and Anasta became captain. Roll back a year further and oosteras under ricky commenced the long losing streak when Ricky and gus fell out and stoppd talking. Roll forward to present and I get the impression Gus's involvemrnt with freddy must have dimished. Fallen out I don't know, but I would be amazed if Gus was involved in helping Freddy and they would perform this badly.

The loss of most attacking ability agreed can be traced to loss of Toops and Amos, the few sparks who made something happen, even given their silly errors. the loss of Maubs in the centres has left Sa completely exposed as a definsive incompetent. Atleast 4 of the tries on Saturday, Sa was loitering in the vicinity, either not sliding, not chasing hard, missing a man, generally leaving gaps that othersd had to cover for. last year Anasta was playing a whole lot better, this year a shadow of his former self, which still wasnt that great a height either.

Freddie's lackadaisical attitude sucks......"wow how good is Gidley"....HE HAS NO IDEA FULLSTOP ON HOW TO STOP THE DECLINE!!

I admire what Smith has done in Newcastle...

But he did not turn them around, he booted them out and replaced them with players who did respect what he was doing...

It all started with Newton and Reynoldson..

Getting rid of Buderus was the end of it all....

As a commentator maybe but as a coach I dont agree mate.

And if they dont respect the coach and believe in the message its the players IMO who have the problem.

If the coach cant get the message across thats a different issue of course. Ive never seen a Gus coached side that doesnt perform.

Has Freddy had the chance to do that as yet mate???

Will a change in coach change anything in the short term???

My Brian Smith comments were a response to BG's post...

I must say, I only wish I could see just a little bit of Smith in Fittler, but I can't..
