Don't think he gave up, was marked differently in 2014, his passes weren't sticking as much and i think his defensive role was much underrated by alot on here.
If sonny gave up in 2014, then so did the rest of the team, and whether there was a division in the team by those who took a stance to reduce drinking and partying, to those who didn't, is a rumour that i don't know if true.

Why is the club so desperate to retain players who would rather get pissed than properly prepare for playing a season of NRL?

Going on the fact that the coach put that self same player, who was playing with a busted hamstring, in a must win final last year, one could be confused as to whether the obsessive love the club has for that player is more important to the club than the chance to get into a grand final.
Now you are in lalaland - obviously you would have preferred Daniel Mortimer at 7 in that game.
At the point that Pearce's hamstring gave way, we had worked our way back into the game and it was game on. As soon as he went off, Hastings showed his inexperience and Maloney went to water. Pearce was in that team because he is the clubs best 7 and has been for many years.
