Interesting for those old enough to remember, the SMH used to be a conservative paper. Apparently they started turning in the early 60s because of a rumor that Mary, Lady Fairfax (matriarch of the family) was involved in an affair with the then P.M. Honest Bob Menzies. They supported Arthur Caldwell in the 1961 election campaign because of this rumor.
