  • South Sydney CEO John Lee quits for Sydney Roosters switch

SOUTH Sydney CEO John Lee has quit the Rabbitohs to take up a position with sworn enemies the Sydney Roosters.
Lee has shown a natural finesse for being a club CEO since taking over from Shane Richardson but with big Richo returning to the Bunnies, his cards were essentially marked.
Powerful Roosters chairman Nick Politis has capitalised on the Rabbitohs standoff and handed Lee the job of heading up the front office at one of the NRL’s most influential clubs.
The Rabbitohs and the Roosters are expected to put out a statement confirming the switch shortly.
Lee has presided over a tumultuous 12 months at the Rabbitohs which included posting a $1.4 million profit and the prescription drugs overdose of Dylan Walker and Aaron Gray.
The Roosters have been seeking a strong administrator since chief operating officer Brian Canavan’s departure last month.
With Lee’s political background and strong rugby league pedigree the CEO will be ideal for the Roosters.
There was a view once Richardson returned to the Rabbitohs as general manager of football Lee was at risk of becoming a lame duck CEO.
It’s also understood Lee had clashed with Souths co-owner Russell Crowe over a range of issues, another reason he needed a fresh start.

    As expected...

Mr Lee joins the Roosters from the South Sydney Rabbitohs where he held the position of Chief Executive.
“After an extensive process, we are delighted to appoint someone of John’s business, management and leadership experience to the role of Sydney Roosters Chief Executive Officer,” said Mr Politis AM.
“Following the recent departure of our former Chief Operating Officer Football, Brian Canavan, after a total of 18 years loyal service to our Club, we took the opportunity to reassess the structure of our organisation, and there is no doubt that John is the best candidate to lead our Club and take our business forward,” added Mr Politis AM.

Separate to rugby league, Mr Lee has served on the Australian Sports Commission (2011-2015), as well as having run a number of companies and government departments in NSW. He has extensive experience in the transport and tourism sectors however he has a passion for sport, especially rugby league.
“It is a privilege to join the Sydney Roosters. They are a Foundation Club with a strong roster, talented coach, professional Board, and a well-run back office,” said Mr Lee.
”I look forward to working with the staff and Board to ensure the club continues to deliver excellent results to its members, fans and corporate partners,” he added.

Hmmm, very interesting given Uncle Nick's concerns about tearing down Allianz Stadium.
