Stanley Waqa's tackle last night was one of the most stupid tackles I have ever seen; could have broken the guy's neck, and all it did was put the Roosters in more trouble.

I reckon good clean tackles prevent a lot of stupid penalties that come from the big group hugging session tackles. They also require less commitment; if 1 man can stop the player around the legs then you leave all of your men in line ready to make the next tackle. They also use less energy because they haven't just picked up a 100kg rugby player and tried to drop him on his head.

This is also good when the tackle fails... if 4 men try to tackle 1 guy and that tackle fails (e.g. he offloads while 4 men are grabbing him) then... OUCH! There's a big gaping hole! (saw it too many times last night.) On the other hand, if 1 guy goes for it and misses, he's got his mate's standing in line ready to back him up; they can also reduce the guy's options by marking people he could potentially offload to (forcing him to go to ground or make silly mistakes that can lead to turnovers.)

It's simple stuff... why can't they get it right?
I agree with what your saying in theory.

But theres no reward for the 1 on 1 grassing leg tackle anymore. Theres no dominant/surrender call unlike the 3-4 blokes stopping a bloke high and flopping/dragging him backwards. Unfortunatley most times I see a 1 on 1 tackle around the legs the player has no time to get to marker before the balls played.

Our ineptly coached players then either roll over the tackled player giving a penalty, or someone flops giving a penalty or we dont mark up straight giving a penalty or worse leaving a big hole up the middle which is exploited by smart dummy 1/2s.

IMO we arent doing anything different to the successful sides. We just do it badly. The tackle rules and definitions of dominant/surrender are the problems. They do not reward good defence, just wrestling and bear hugging shit.

    The FlogPen .

    You know it makes sense.

What are you talking about....Stanely tackled by grabbing a guys collar and spun him around.....no penalty, nothing, so how does it cause the Roosters in more trouble??.....

The simple things are giving away penalties left right and centre because the game and the referees have changed so muc over the last few years, that was what one a brilliant ball and all hit, is not classed as dangerous, because the tackled players feet come off the ground with the momentum....

Our kids in under 9 's are being taught to tackle around the legs, yet in the big games these same kids are seeing inept refs penalising for things that have no right to be a penalty....its god damned confusing with all this inconsistancy....
