I am dumbfounded by the tabloid driven feeding frenzy this time. The hounding will just not let up, and for an incident where no laws were broken.
Usually i'm not surprised, being familiar with how these media organisations work internally first hand. But this is something else. A weaker man may well be driven into traumatic depths of depression. Regardless of what you think of him as a player, I sure as hell hope he is ok but I certainly wouldn't be if I was in his position and I am a tough bugger mentally.
The episode occoured some five weeks ago now, yet this is a sample of the headlines that have gone to press over the past 48 hours:
*Mitchell Pearce’s fine is huge, but he’s just lucky to be playing footy*
*Mitchell Pearce has had his last alcoholic drink*
*Pearce's career should end*
“Complex and unprecedented”: How Pearce ended up on the sidelines $75K poorer*
*Does Mitchell Pearce deserve to be kicked out of the NRL?*
*Pearce should never be allowed back*
Given the entire episode took place behind closed doors and was perfectly legal, I think the media had a moral obligation to rein in 'Dog-gate' when it has got out of hand, and it is now likely to severely affect his mental wellbeing.
In my book, the media have come out of this episode looking far worse than Mitchell.
