CRONULLA forward Reni Maitua has tested positive to a banned substance and is poised to be stood down by the NRL.

In another black eye for the code, the former Kangaroos lock tested positive to the substance during a routine Australian Sports Drug Agency test about three weeks ago.

It is understood the drug has been identified as Clenbuterol, a stimulant which has been used by athletes to improve muscel mass and reduce body fat. Read a fact file on the drug here

Clenbuterol is not approved for human use in Australia and is also banned under the Olympic
Movement's World Anti-Doping Code Prohibited Classes of Substances and Prohibited Methods.

The Daily Telegraph understands Cronulla chief executive Tony Zappia will meet Maitua’s agent Sam Ayoub and legal counsel in the city before a press conference is held later tonight.

The NRL has been informed of the positive test.

Maitua joined Cronulla at the beginning of the year after being sacked from the Bulldogs over a long history of off-field indiscretions.

I think that this could be the end of his career given his history of bad behaviour.......

I heard something along the lines that the Police knew very early on regarding this positive test. Seems they have kept their eye on him after he escaped conviction on the charge of bashing a police woman

He has tested positive to a steroid,not a recreational drug.
The National Rugby League, after consultation with the Cronulla Sharks, has imposed a provisional suspension effective immediately upon Cronulla’s Reni Maitua over a positive drug test result to Clenbuterol.

The NRL is not in a position to give any further detail in relation to the test, which is still at the ‘A’ Sample stage.

Under both the World Anti-Doping Authority Code and the NRL Anti Doping Policy, a player is subject to a provisional suspension upon notification of the ‘A’ Sample.

The player has the right to waive the ‘B’ sample and move to an expedited hearing or wait until the ‘B’ Sample is confirmed, at which point the NRL will again offer the opportunity to expedite the process
